Unique Opportunities and Key Programs

Trauma faculty and fellows at workUnits

Trauma Resuscitation Unit (TRU)

A specialized unit that allows the timely and efficient evaluation and treatment of all trauma patients arriving at STC.

Educational Opportunities

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)

STC and UMMC, together, support one of the nation's largest extracorporeal life support programs. We provide both Venoarterial (VA) and Venovenous (VV) ECMO support to patients. Our fellows take an active role in learning and managing this type of advanced mechanical support.
Learn more about ECMO >

Molecular Adsorbent Recirculating System (MARS)

Often referred to as “liver dialysis” or “albumin dialysis,” MARS is a treatment used for acute, fulminant liver failure. Here at STC, it is utilized to support select patients with liver failure as a bridge to recovery or transplantation.

Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT)

The use of CRRT is common amongst our trauma and medical patient populations. Unlike many institutions and intensive care units where nephrology manages CRRT, at STC the critical care teams are responsible for CRRT. Fellows receive didactic and hands-on education on the fine points of managing CRRT and become proficient at it during their fellowship.

This team exemplifies Dr. Cowley’s Golden Hour philosophy.

The Center for Shock, Trauma, and Anesthesiology Research (STAR-ORC)

STAR is a multidisciplinary research and educational center dedicated to the study of trauma. STAR helps to support ongoing research by our fellows.

C-STARS (Center for the Sustainment of Trauma and Readiness Skills)

STC and the armed forces have had a long-standing relationship. STC partners with Walter Reed Army Medical Center, the Maryland National Guard, and the U.S. Air Force to help train our military personnel in trauma and critical prior to their deployment.

Simulation Centers

There are two high-fidelity simulation centers shared by UMMC and STC that provide state of the art teaching facilities for trainees. Didactic and hands-on experience in these facilities occurs regularly as part of the educational curriculum during the fellowship.
