Overview
Originally a Trauma Fellowship, our program is considered by many to be the premier clinical trauma training program. The Fellowship evolved into the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship in October 1993, when it was accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (the parent body of the Residency Review Committee in Surgery).
The Surgical Critical Care Fellowship experience is based at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center (STC) and the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). The goal of the Fellowship is to produce academic leaders in the areas of critical care and trauma. Under the guidance of a strong faculty, Fellows master innovative techniques in critical care management, including new methods of mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic assessment, hemorrhage control, and extracorporeal support of failing organs.
The Fellowship program involves patient care, education, and research. The program includes the following rotations:
- Trauma Surgery
- MultiTrauma Critical Care
- NeuroTrauma Critical Care
- Critical Care Echocardiography
- Surgical Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
- Cardiac Surgery ICU
- Acute Care Emergency Surgery
- Palliative Medicine
- Elective
Fellows become proficient in the development and implementation of appropriate and complete diagnostic and treatment plans. Fellows are expected to grasp the art and science of ICU and trauma team administration and to achieve a working understanding of the major issues in critical care, such as triage, resource allocation, and ethical dilemmas.
Upon the completion of this Fellowship, Fellows will have acquired the necessary knowledge and experience to sit for the Certifying Examination in Surgical Critical Care given by the American Board of Surgery.
