About the Fellowship
A Leading Fellowship Training Environment
The Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) Fellowship at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center is a fellowship designed to provide advanced training in multiple modalities of extracorporeal life support, including:
- Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)
- Molecular Adsorbent Recirculating System (MARS)
- Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT)
- Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs)
The ECLS fellowship is intended for board-eligible or board-certified physicians in critical care (CCM, ACCM or SCC). Applicants must have fellowship training in critical care, but we encourage applicants with residency training in emergency medicine, internal medicine, general surgery, or anesthesia.
The ECLS Fellowship is primarily designed for physicians who want to work in a cardiac surgical or cardiothoracic intensive care unit (ICU), or who want to develop or lead an ECMO program in the future.
ECLS Rotation Schedule
ECLS Rotation Schedule
Fellows will spend the majority of clinical “fellow” time in the Cardiac Surgery ICU (CSICU) with graduated responsibilities throughout the year. Elective time is typically focused on cardiac extracorporeal support rotations. Elective time is flexible, but rotations including interventional cardiology, advanced heart failure, interventional pulmonology, and trauma endovascular surgery are popular.
The fellowship is not ACGME accredited, and fellows will have an appointment at the clinical instructor level in the appropriate department. Fellows will spend time as an attending intensivist one week a month in the Multi-Trauma Critical Care (MTCC) Unit on the VV ECMO side. Moonlighting opportunities exist at our community sites in the ICU as well as at a few community emergency departments for those trained in emergency medicine.
Additional experiences in advanced echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, obstetric critical care, and REBOA (retrograde balloon occlusion of the aorta) are available.
*In-person orientation will occur around July 20.
