Helicopter lands at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of MarylandThis is the primary center at which you will rotate for the majority of the time during your one- or two-year fellowship. While physically connected and sharing numerous resources including residents, fellows, and many clinical services, STC and UMMC are technically two distinct entities that are associated with the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

STC is a free-standing trauma hospital in which injured patients are brought in through the Trauma Resuscitation Unit (TRU) and are admitted to the inpatient units in the Trauma building for the duration of their hospitalization. The TRU is a 13-bed resuscitation area with dedicated trauma CT scanners, 10 trauma operating rooms (including a hybrid OR), and a trauma-specific post-anesthesia care unit. STC also has three distinct adult intensive care units, a Critical Care Resuscitation Unit, and more than 100 inpatient beds.

The University of Maryland Medical Center is a teaching hospital with a wide range of residencies and fellowships. It houses 806 beds, five distinct adult intensive care units, a 52-bed NICU, and 19-bed Pediatric ICU. UMMC is a high-volume primary care and quaternary referral center for acute care surgery, cancer care, neurocritical care, cardiac/vascular/transplant surgery, and women’s and children’s health.
