Advances in the applications, technologies and methodologies of radiation oncology continue to evolve rapidly, and the delivery of radiation therapy has become more complex, making it imperative that radiation oncology professionals remain current on the state-of-the-art techniques. The 20th Annual Radiation Oncology Symposium - Best of is a CME accredited educational course which will provide attendees with a review of potentially practice-changing studies presented at major national meetings and published in high-impact journals over the past year. This course will review the latest innovations, updates in standards of care, and treatment modalities in radiation oncology. This includes the newest developments in treating the following cancers: genitourinary, head & neck, central nervous system, gynecologic, gastrointestinal, breast, thoracic, pediatric, and lymphoma/sarcoma. This half-day, high-yield course brings together leading experts from the University of Maryland’s nationally ranked faculty and physicians from institutions across the U.S. who will impart their expertise on future, well-practiced radiation oncologists.

In-person and virtual attendees will have the opportunity to meet the experts for two disease sites of their choice. Course attendees may bring questions or cases that they would like input on to two 20-minute sessions.

A light lunch will be offered prior to the start of the course, and a reception will take place at the end of the day. Online access to the course materials and recordings will be available to registrants for 6 months after the course concludes. 

Accreditation: The University of Maryland School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

CME Credits: The University of Maryland School of Medicine designates this Live activity for a maximum of 5.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.


Registration

This event offers either in-person or virtual advance registration at the general registration price of $250.00. Same-day registration will be available for $300.00. Registration is free for resident trainees attending virtually. If you are a resident who would like to register without CME credit, please contact Jessica White at jessica.white@umm.edu, and include proof of residency to register. 

Registration is also free for faculty and staff affiliated with the University of Maryland (a $20.00 fee for those seeking CME credit will apply). If you are affiliated with the University of Maryland and do not need CME credit but would like to attend, please contact Jessica at jessica.white@umm.edu.

Target Audience

The Annual Radiation Oncology Symposium- "Best of" is designed for radiation oncologists. Residents, radiation therapists, medical oncologists, hematologists, nurse practitioners, medical physicists, dosimetrists, physician assistants and nurses will also benefit from the course.


Learning Objectives 

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe current treatment options for various malignancies.
  • Assess important studies and clinical trials in radiation oncology.
  • Review the role and indications for radiation therapy.

About Karl L. Prado, PhD, FACR, FAAPM
1950–2018


Dr. Karl L. Prado served as a faculty member and invaluable medical physics educator to trainees and staff from 2009 to 2017 at the University of Maryland Department of Radiation Oncology. He dedicated himself to clinical program development and the advancement of new technologies and safety protocols in radiation oncology, so that every treatment could be tailored to the specific needs of each patient.

Dr. Prado was a long-time speaker at the course up until his retirement in 2018. In 2019, the Physics and Radiobiology Review Course was renamed to honor the memory and unmatched teaching abilities of Dr. Karl L. Prado.

The Dr. Karl Prado Endowment for Radiation Oncology Trainees was also named for Dr. Prado to honor his remarkable influence. This fund advances education and training in radiation oncology for talented and compassionate healers and innovators who will aggressively pursue dramatic advances in radiation therapy. The Dr. Prado endowment helps support our educational mission by funding trainees, medical and physics residents, fellows, radiation therapists, dosimetrists, nurses, and medical students for conference attendance, publication fees, educational activities, wellness, and supports department educational courses.
