Application Process & Interviews

All applicants must be graduates of an approved medical school and have satisfactorily completed one year of approved post-graduate training (PGY-1), prior to entering clinical training in radiation oncology. We accept all applications through ERAS. All positions are only offered through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).

The following materials must be submitted through ERAS:

  1. ERAS application
  2. Curriculum vitae (ERAS format is acceptable)
  3. Personal statement
  4. Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) or "Dean's letter"
  5. Three letters of recommendation, preferably including one or two from academic Radiation Oncologists.
  6. Medical school transcript
  7. USMLE Step 1 results
  8. USMLE Step 2 results, when available
  9. Photograph
  10. Your email address

Interview Information

All interviews are by invitation only and are typically held in November and December. The interviews will be virtual. Interviews last for one day and include an optional invitation to a virtual dinner on the evening prior with the current residents.

Mission Statement

Our goal is to cultivate an educational environment which provides the full spectrum of learning opportunities in clinical, medical physics and radiobiology. Our flexible curriculum is designed to enable a resident to optimize their learning experience throughout their four years of training. It is our expectation that upon the completion of the program a resident will be an outstanding radiation oncologist, capable of making an immediate impact in either an academic or community practice setting.

The Residency Review Committee (RRC) for Radiation Oncology, operating within the accreditation authority delegated to it by the ACGME, reviewed the performance of the University of Maryland Radiation Oncology Training Program in 2009. After completion of the review, the RRC granted Continued Full Accreditation without citation and with two commendations.

Prerequisites

You must complete one year of approved post-graduate training (PGY-1) prior to entering clinical training in Radiation Oncology. The first year of postgraduate clinical training must be spent in internal medicine, family, medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, surgery or surgical specialties, pediatrics, or a transitional year program. This PGY-1 year must include at least nine months of direct patient care in medical and/or surgical specialties other than radiation oncology.

Osteopathic Medical Students

If you are an Osteopathic Medical Student, we require USMLE Step 1 results to be considered for an interview. USMLE Step 2 results should be submitted if available.
