At the University of Maryland Department of Radiation Oncology, we are very proud of our tradition of educational events. We host several events throughout the year, including: our Radiation Oncology Symposium in January, our Mock Orals Course, the Dr. Karl Prado Physics & Radiobiology Review Course, the Hyperthermia Therapy Practice School, and in 2022 - the Symposium on Practical AI in Radiation Oncology. The target audiences include radiation oncologists, radiation oncology residents and other practitioners in the field of oncology.

Radiation Oncology Symposium – Best of 2024

The Radiation Oncology Symposium - "Best of" is a CME accredited course which will provide the attendees with the new changes in technology and treatment modalities that have occurred in the past year. This includes the latest developments in treating the following cancers: genitourinary, head & neck, central nervous system, gynecologic, gastrointestinal, breast, thoracic, lymphoma/sarcoma, and pediatric.
Mock Orals Course
Friday, February 28 & Sunday, March 9, 2025
The virtual interactive Mock Orals Course will simulate the radiation oncology oral board examination through series of one-on-one timed interviews reviewing high yield cases with individual feedback (day one) and a didactic half-day session (day two) with disease-site experts providing an overview with practical tips. The course is dedicated to aid young practicing radiation oncologists prepare for the oral board examination.
Annual Dr. Karl Prado Physics & Radiobiology Review Course

The purpose of the Annual Dr. Karl Prado Physics & Radiobiology Review Course is to provide a comprehensive review of physics and radiobiology for senior radiation oncology residents and medical physics residents who are taking the board exam for the first time as well as radiation oncologists already in practice who are preparing for re-certification examinations. The instructors for this course include a combination of invited nationally recognized faculty and our own top-ranked faculty in the departments of radiobiology and physics.

Dr. Karl L. Prado served as a faculty member and invaluable medical physics educator to trainees and staff from 2009 to 2017 at the University of Maryland Department of Radiation Oncology. In 2019, the department renamed the Dr. Karl Prado Physics and Radiobiology Review Course to honor the memory of Dr. Karl Prado and recognize his unmatched teaching abilities.
The Dr. Prado endowment helps support our educational mission by funding trainees, medical and physics residents, fellows, radiation therapists, dosimetrists, nurses, and medical students for a number of initiatives including attendance at research conferences, educational events, training, wellness activities, and elective rotations.

Hyperthermia Therapy Practice School
Check back for future dates
The Hyperthermia Therapy Practice School is a CME accredited course that will provide the attendees with the theoretical aspects of hyperthermia in a lecture format with a question and answer session. Several cases will be reviewed to explain the different approaches to treat different treatment sites. Small groups will facilitate in-depth training of practical guidelines for thermal therapy treatment delivery, and will practice the treatment delivery in terms of software and hardware in experimental phantoms.
Symposium on Practical AI in Radiation Oncology
Held on July 15, 2022
A new course in 2022, the University of Maryland Symposium on Practical AI in Radiation Oncology is a one-day primer course that will provide clinicians and researchers with a clear understanding of basic concepts in artificial intelligence (AI), the potential benefits and pitfalls, and the tools to develop their own strategies for investigating or implementing AI in routine clinical practice.
