Honors & Awards - November

Yen-Pei Christy ChangYen-Pei Christy Chang, PhD, MS, Associate Professor, Department of Medicine, was honored with the UMB 2023 Founders Week Educator of the Year Award in October 2023. Dr. Chang, an 18-year veteran recognized for her passion for teaching and mentoring, holds secondary appointments in UMSOM’s Departments of Epidemiology & Public Health as well as Biochemistry & Molecular Biology.

Seema DeshpandeSeema Deshpande, MBBS, Associate Professor, Department of Anesthesiology, was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Women in Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology (WICTA) and was also elected to serve on three committees for the American Society of Anesthesiologists – the Committee on Residents and Medical Students, the Committee on Professional Diversity, and the Committee on Academic Anesthesiology. 

Reha Erzurumlu, PhD, Professor, Department of Neurobiology, is now the new Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed scientific journal Somatosensory & Motor Research, published by Taylor and Francis, London, UK.

 

Samuel GalvagnoSamuel Galvagno, DO, PhD, MBA, FCCM, Professor and Interim Chair, Department of Anesthesiology, was promoted to a general officer position in the United States Air Force Reserve. Colonel Galvagno was appointed Mobilization Assistant to the Command Surgeon, Headquarters Air Combat Command, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, VA. Col. Galvagno will assist with organizing, training, and maintaining the health of 81,000 active-duty and civilian personnel located at 11 bases and more than 300 operating locations worldwide. Col. Galvagno will also serve as the liaison and adviser for all medical matters regarding the mobilization, training, and equipping of more than 1,100 medics from 31 Air Combat Command USAF Reserve Squadrons.

Jeffrey Hasday, MD, the Dr. Herbert Berger Professor of Medicine and Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Medicine, along with Paul Shapiro, PhD, Professor, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the School of Pharmacy, were awarded a patent from the Government of India on September 5, 2023, for their “p38 MAPK” invention that focused on treatments for inflammatory diseases. These two co-inventors and the research team of “Non-ATP/Catalytic Site P38 Mitogen Activated Protein Kinase Inhibitors” discovered an innovative class of drugs called kinases – specifically ERK mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK). Drs. Hasday and Shapiro were also recognized with the David J. Ramsay Entrepreneurs of the Year Award presented during UMB’s Founders Week celebration, which was held October 16-19, 2023.

Matthew Laurens, MD, MPH, Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD), was awarded the 2023 Bailey K. Ashford Medal for Distinguished Work in Tropical Medicine by the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) on October 18, 2023, during its annual meeting.

 

Hangfan Liu, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, was named as one of seven fellows of the 2023 Inaugural Cohort of the William H. Gates Sr. Fellowship from the Alzheimer’s Disease Data Initiative, which was established to support a new generation of researchers who have novel approaches to end Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD). 

Kirsten LykeKirsten Lyke, MD, Professor, Department of Medicine, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD), was elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) in October 2023 during the NAM’s annual meeting. Dr. Lyke was recognized for her pivotal research in emerging infections and human challenge models that have informed and shaped global vaccine and public health policy.

 

Samhati MondalSamhati Mondal, MBBS, Associate Professor, Department of Anesthesiology, was invited to the test writing committee for the National Board of Echocardiography, where she will help develop the test for basic perioperative transesophageal echocardiography, as well as the program for Maintenance of Certification, Echocardiography (MOCE). Dr. Mondal was also named as a member of the Scientific Program Committee for the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA).

Kathleen NeuzilKathleen Neuzil, MD, MPH, FIDSA, the Myron M. Levine, MD, DTPH Professor in Vaccinology and Director of the Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD), was named the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) 2023 Researcher of the Year during the Founder’s Week celebration. Dr. Neuzil and her CVD colleagues led several vaccine trials and coordinated with multiple research sites across the country in work that ultimately led to U.S. Food and Drug Administration emergency use authorization for COVID-19 vaccines. During her career, Dr. Neuzil has conducted clinical and epidemiologic studies on vaccines for infectious diseases and has been instrumental in the global implementation of vaccine programs, most recently for typhoid fever. Her research on influenza virus is extensive and includes pivotal epidemiologic studies of disease burden, clinical trials of vaccine candidates, and human challenge studies.

Adam PucheAdam Puche, PhD, Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Neurobiology, was selected by the Academy Fellows of Pass and Susel and the MELA Executive Board to receive the 2023 Babak J. Jamasbi, MD ’89 Award for Medical Educator of the Year. This award recognizes faculty who have made a demonstrated impact on advancing medical education at the University of Maryland School of Medicine over the prior academic year. His work focuses on the complexities of curriculum and logistical implementation of anatomy and occurred during a major teaching facility renovation.

 


 

Honors & Awards - December

Vasken Dilsizian, MD, Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, was the recipient of the 2023 Taplin Memorial Lecture Award at the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI). The award was presented at the Western Region annual meeting held November 3-5, 2023, in Vancouver, BC, Canada, where Dr. Dilsizian was recognized for his significant scientific contributions and outstanding achievements in the field of cardiac imaging.

Rebecca Lorsung, an MD/PhD student in Dr. Asaf Keller’s lab, Department of Neurobiology, recently received two awards: the Best Poster Award, which was presented at the annual symposium of the Center to Advance Chronic Pain Research (CACPR), as well as a travel fellowship to attend the 2024 Winter Conference on Brain Research to be held at Beaver Run in Breckenridge, CO.

 

Miguel Luján, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellow in Dr. Joseph Cheer’s lab, Department of Neurobiology, won the 2023 Postdoctoral Fellow Excellence in Research Award, which is presented by the Cheer Lab.

 

 

Alexandros PoulopoulosAlexandros Poulopoulos, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacology & UM-MIND, was elected to the Medical Education Continuous Quality Improvement (MECQI) committee for a two-year term.

 

 

William RegineWilliam F. Regine, MD, the Isadore & Fannie Schneider Foxman Chair of Radiation Oncology and Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, was honored by the American Cancer Society (ACS) at “An Evening of Hope: A Celebration Dedicated to the Hope Lodge Capital Campaign,” which was held on November 9, 2023, at the Baltimore Museum of Industry. Dr. Regine is Campaign Chair for the effort to raise funds to create a new and expanded Hope Lodge, serving the needs of cancer patients who travel to Baltimore for their treatment.

Alexis SalernoAlexis Salerno, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, received the Future Leader in Education Award from the American College of Emergency Physicians’ Emergency Ultrasound Section, which was presented at the ACEP Scientific Assembly in Philadelphia, PA, on October 11, 2023.

 

Samuel Tisherman, MD, Professor, Department of Surgery, Program in Trauma, and Nick Morris, MD, Associate Professor, Department of Neurology, Program in Trauma, developed an educational game titled “Distress!” with Grendel Games. The game won a Gold Prize at the International Serious Play Awards in the Healthcare / Medical / Pharmaceutical / Nursing category. This was part of their UMMC Innovation grant titled “In-situ, Interprofessional Simulation to Improve the Response to Rapidly Deteriorating Patients.”

Marco Venniro, PhD, Assistant Professor, and Thomas Jhou, PhD, Associate Professor, both with the Department of Neurobiology, were elected as members of the School of Medicine Research Council (SRC), which advises the dean on all matters related to research at our school.

 

 


 

Appointments - November

Michy Kelly, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Neurobiology, was elected to the Faculty Senate as a representative for the School of Medicine.

 

 

Marcel Bahia Lanza, PhD, Research Associate, Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, has been selected to join the Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion Committee for the International Society of Electrophysiology & Kinesiology.

 

Amit Sawant, PhD, Professor and Vice Chair for Medical Physics, Department of Radiation Oncology, announced on October 10, 2023, that the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs had granted initial accreditation to the new Graduate Certificate Program in Medical Physics. Narottam Lamichhane, PhD, Director, and Michael MacFarlane, PhD, Associate Director, will lead the program, which is intended to provide nontraditional degree holders (e.g., computer science, nuclear engineering, biomedical engineering) a pathway to eligibility for a medical physics residency. This is the first such program in the state of Maryland and is already enrolling students.

 


 

Appointments - December

Roy FilmRoy Film, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, was sworn in as the 41st President of the American Physical Therapy Association Maryland after completing two terms as the chapter's Vice President. The ceremony took place during the American Physical Therapy Association DC and Maryland 2023 Annual Conference, which was held at Howard Community College in Columbia, MD, on November 4, 2023.

Neeraja Murali, DO, MPH, Assistant Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, has been appointed as the department’s first Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. In this role, she will be the primary contact for faculty, residents, and staff with DEI concerns and will collaborate with stakeholders on inclusive and equitable recruitment, mentoring, career development, and wellness. Dr. Murali was also recently elected to the UMB Faculty Senate.

 


 

In the News - December

Magali Fontaine, MD, PhD, Professor, Department of Pathology, was interviewed by AABB News for an October 2023 news article that focused on working to improve transfusion medicine and biotherapies practices. The article spotlighted Dr. Fontaine’s career in transplant immunology and the blood and biotherapies field.

 

Emerson Wickwire, PhD, Professor, Departments of Psychiatry and Medicine, conducted a virtual interview with Fox 45 News on November 3, 2023, titled “Fall Back Extra Hour This Weekend Could Come with Health Risks.” That same day, he also conducted a virtual interview with CBS News titled “How Can You Prepare for the Health Impacts of Clocks Falling Back Asleep?” and a virtual interview with NPR News titled “Fall Clock Changes Could Bring Mental Health Challenges.”

 


 

Grants & Contracts - November

Samuel Barlow, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Physiology, has been awarded the 2023 Regeneron Prize for Creative Innovation. As a finalist, Dr. Barlow received $5,000 as well as an invitation to participate in an in-person competition. As the winner of the prize, he received a $50,000 award. Dr. Barlow is a fellow in the laboratory of Thomas Blanpied, PhD

 

Erika DaviesErika Davies, PhD, PI, Assistant Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, was awarded a one-year $3,549,010 contract from the HHS/BARDA Nonclinical Development Radiological and Nuclear Network (RTOR RADNUC 2201) for “Performance Verification of Institutional Radiation Dose Response for Acute Radiation Syndrome (ARS) Animal Models.”

 

Jason FalveyJason Falvey, PT, DPT, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation,  has received one-year funding from the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing (UM-IHC) Pilot Funding Program for his proposal entitled "Identifying Unmet Needs for Successful Aging in Place Among Older Adults with Severe Diabetes Complications in Low-Income Neighborhoods."

 

Daniela FrancoDaniela Franco, Graduate Student in Mary Kay Lobo's laboratory in the Department of Neurobiology, was awarded an F99/K00 to study the role of vitronectin in neuron-microglia interactions in the context of social stress. The F99/K00 is a Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Fellow Transition Award, designed to encourage and retain outstanding graduate students who have demonstrated potential and interest in pursuing careers as independent researchers. The award will facilitate Daniela's transition into a successful research postdoctoral appointment.

Katie KrukKatie Kruk, BS, Department of Pharmacology, received a three-year F30 grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) for “A Role for the Orphan Receptor, GPR37, in Estradiol-induced Changes in Sleep-Wake States.”

 

Anna MaximovaAnna Maximova, BS, MD, PhD Student, Department of Pharmacology, was awarded a two-year $80,438 F30 training grant from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIH/NIMH) for "A Unique Peri-hippocampal Mast Cell Population Drives Neurodevelopment."

 

Sui-Seng TeeSui-Seng Tee, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, was awarded $50,000 in the Catalyst Phase of the National Academy of Medicine’s Healthy Longevity Global Competition for “The Liver Protects Against Aging-Related Dementia.”

 

 


 

Grants & Contracts - December

Marianne Cloeren, MD, MPH, FACOEM, FACP, Associate Professor, Division of Occupational & Environmental Medicine, is the PI of a 3.5-year, $495,000 award from the Maryland Department of Health, titled “Workplace PROSPER (Partnering to Reduce Opioid Stigma and Promote Employment in Recovery).” This effort will continue work on developing and disseminating a toolkit to help employers manage opioids in the workplace, in collaboration with the UM School of Social Work.

David Dreizin, MD, Associate Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, was awarded a four-year, $1,256,982 NIH R01 grant to study “Human-centered CT-based CADx Tools for Traumatic Torso Hemorrhage.”

 

Kevin Kim, MD, MHS, Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, was awarded a five-year, $2,455,000 grant from AstraZeneca to conduct a clinical trial to study “Concurrently with Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE) Compared to TACE Alone in Patients with Locoregional Hepatocellular Carcinoma (EMERALD-3).”

 

Dirk Mayer, Dr rer nat, and Miroslaw Janowski, MD, PhD, both with the Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, were awarded a two-year, $424,875 NIH R21 grant to study “Hyperpolarized 13C Metabolic Imaging in an Endovascular Swine Model of Ischemic Stroke.”

 

Sui-Seng TeeSui-Seng Tee, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, and Jun Seok Son, PhD, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences, were awarded a three-year, $618,000 NIH R21 grant to study “Longitudinal Imaging of Maternal Exercise and Exerkine Effects on Offspring Metabolism.”

 

Phuoc Tran, MD, PhD, Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, received a one-year, $19,858 subaward with NRG Oncology Foundation, Inc., from NIH U10CA180868, for “Evaluating Response to Moderate Hypofractionation vs. SBRT in NRG GU-005 Based on Decipher Genomic Classifier Integrated Biomarker.”

 

 


 

Presentations, Events, Lectures & Workshops - November

Michael Benitez, MD, Professor, Department of Medicine, presented a Grand Rounds conference on October 5, 2023, to the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California on the “Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe.”

 

Jason FalveyJason Falvey, PT, DPT, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, delivered a presentation at West Virginia University for the Department of Physical Therapy on September 8, 2023, as part of its Visiting Lecture Series. His presentation was titled "Towards Disability Justice: Optimizing Recovery and Resilience for Older Adults after Serious Illnesses and Injuries."

  • Dr. Falvey also was a Co-Chair on the American Physical Therapy Association's Economic Value of Physical Therapy in the United States Work Group, which produced the landmark economic study "The Economic Value of Physical Therapy in the United States – A Report from the American Physical Therapy Association."


Kimberly Marter, CMD, MS (R)(T)(R), Senior Dosimetrist, Department of Radiation Oncology, presented “Intensity-Modulated Radiation Treatment Tips and Tricks” to a virtual audience of more than 70 radiation oncology clinicians, therapists, and physicists, the majority from countries in Africa, on October 14, 2023. The presentation was part of a workshop sponsored by RAD-AID, an international organization committed to improving and optimizing access to medical imaging, radiology, and radiotherapy in low-resourced regions of the world.

The University of Maryland School of Medicine was well represented at the 2023 Annual Meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), held October 1-4, 2023, in San Diego, CA. Faculty members, residents, postdoctoral students, and others from the Department of Radiation Oncology gave 37 presentations. These included podium and poster presentations of scientific research, as well as invited lectures and service as session moderators and on discussion panels.

  • Phuoc Tran, MD, PhD, Professor and Vice Chair of Research, Department of Radiation Oncology, was recognized by ASTRO with its 2023 Mentorship Award.
  • Two residents received awards: Alexander Allen, MD, the Resident Clinical/Basic Science Research Award; and Hua-Ren Cherng, MD, the Resident Recognition Award/Poster Viewing.

Remarkably, two of the presentations selected from more than 2,000 for the ASTRO media webcast were associated with work from the department:

  • Søren Bentzen, PhD, DMSc, Professor, Department of Epidemiology & Public Health, and Adjunct Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, for “Randomized Controlled Trial of Hypofractionated vs. Normo-fractionated Accelerated Radiation Therapy with or without Cisplatin for Locally Advanced Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HYPNO).”
  • Dr. Allen for “A Precision Medicine Navigator can Mitigate Inequities Associated with Utilization of Genomic Tests in Black Men with Prostate Cancer.”

 


 

Presentations, Events, Lectures & Workshops - December

Omer Awan, MD, MPH, Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, was asked to moderate a panel discussing “Rebuilding Trust: Combating Misinformation in the Digital Age” at the Milken Institute Future of Health Summit, which was held in November 2023 in Washington, D.C.

 

Howard Dubowitz, MB,ChB, MS, FAAP, Professor, Department of Pediatrics, presented a remote plenary on “Neglected Children: Challenges and Controversies” at the XXVIII Congreso de Prevencion y Atencion del Maltrato Infantil del lado de las Ninas held in Bogota, Colombia, on August 29, 2023; a remote plenary on “Addressing Child Neglect: Supporting Children and Families” at the 4th International Child Protection Congress in Izmir, Turkey, on October 4, 2023; and Pediatric Grand Rounds on “Preventing Child Abuse and Neglect” at NYU Langone Medical Center on November 7, 2023.

Linda Horn, PT, DScPT, MHS, GCS, NCS, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, was a co-presenter of an educational session at the American Physical Therapy Association DC and Maryland 2023 Annual Conference, which was held at Howard Community College in Columbia, MD, on November 4, 2023. The session title was “Physical Therapy Management of Older Adults with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome.”

Amal Mattu, MD, Professor of Emergency Medicine and Vice Chair for Academic Affairs, and Mike Winters, MD, Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine, presented lectures on several topics in advanced emergency cardiology, cardiac ischemia, and critical care at COR: The Conference in Rome on September 21-23, 2023.

 

Rachel Skolky, PT, MSPT, DPT, Assistant Professor, and Megan Ortega, PT, DPT, Assistant Professor, both with the Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, presented a poster titled "Utilization of a Weekly Assessment Form as an Early Detection Tool in the Clinical Environment" at the 18th Annual Physical Therapy Education Leadership Conference (ELC), which was held in Philadelphia, PA, on October 13-15, 2023.

Samuel Tisherman, MD, Professor, Department of Surgery, Program in Trauma, served as the Chair of the Program Committee for the Maryland Critical Care Conference. This year’s conference title was “Organ Failure Dominoes.” Ram Subramanian, MD, Professor of Medicine, Emory University School of Medicine, an internationally recognized expert on liver failure, was the keynote speaker. The conference was held on October 19, 2023, at the SMC Campus Center.

Michael WintersMike Winters, MD, Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine and Vice Chair of Clinical and Administrative Affairs, presented “The Perfect Code: A Play-by-Play Analysis” at the American College of Emergency Physicians Scientific Assembly held in Philadelphia, PA, on October 10, 2023.

 

The Department of Emergency Medicine presented its 13th annual conference on “The Crashing Patient: Resuscitation and Risk Management” on campus and to a global online audience on November 8-9, 2023. Amal Mattu, MD, Professor and Vice Chair for Academic Affairs, organized the conference and facilitated panel Q&A sessions on both days. Faculty members’ presentations on November 8 included:

Community Service - November

Faculty and DPT students from the Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science participated in the Baltimore County Department of Aging's 17th Annual "Get Ready! Get Set! Get Fit! 5K Run/Walk and One-Mile Walk" event, which is held to support older adult health and fitness. Ten PTRS students from the Class of 2025 conducted community fall risk screenings on September 18, 2023, using the CDC STEADI functional assessments.

Participating students were Rachel Amick, Sara Beauchamp, Emily Christ and John Huchrowski, Micah McMillan and Kenneth Nolasco, Zachary Obcamp, and Natalie Perez-Rodriguez, along with Sonali Shah and Nikhil Sonthi. The students successfully screened 46 older adults. Faculty representatives included Rachel Skolky, PT, MSPT, DPT, Assistant Professor, and Jason Falvey, PT, DPT, PhD, Assistant Professor.

 


 

Community Service - December

The Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology hosted a picnic for children with sickle cell disease and their families at Patterson Park on October 28, 2023. The event provided an opportunity for families affected by sickle cell disease to connect with community resources, share their experiences, and support one another. The event was supported by volunteers from UMSOM and donors including Dunkin' Donuts, Kamryn Lambert Foundation, William E. Proudford Sickle Cell Fund, Camryn Williams, Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, and the Maryland Sickle Disease Association.

Members of the Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science (PTRS) volunteered at the finish line of the Baltimore Running Festival on October 14, 2023. Michael Zarro, PT, DPT, Assistant Professor; Vincent Conroy, PT, DScPT, Assistant Professor; Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Resident Dr. Jeremy Vanduluitgaarden; and DPT students Zoé Six, Klahe Butty, Maile Johnson, Nicholas Tower, Ayanna Neal, and Julianne Knoblett spent time in the finish line medical tent and recovery zone evaluating and treating musculoskeletal injuries and assisting with post-race recovery.

Members of the Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science DPT Class of 2025, along with Vincent Conroy, PT, DScPT, Assistant Professor, and Elizabeth Parker, PhD, RD, Assistant Professor, participated in the 2023 Pikesville Volunteer Fire Company Open House held on October 15, 2023. Students created an “Anatomy of Sport and Function Station” utilizing their surface anatomy skills. They painted medical illustrations on each other to teach the public about anatomical structures and injury prevention.
