Honors & Awards
Carla Alexander, MD, FAAHPM, Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine and Director of Palliative Care for the Institute of Human Virology Clinical Programs, was among four people honored at the 35th Anniversary Commemoration of the AIDS Action Network Baltimore. The event was held on September 18, 2022.
Rianne Campbell, a postdoctoral fellow in Mary Kay Lobo's laboratory, is the recipient of the 2022 Michael Shipley Postdoctoral Award. This annual award is given to a postdoctoral fellow who has demonstrated excellence in neuroscience research. Dr. Shipley was the inaugural Director of the Program in Neuroscience and Chair of the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology for 25 years.
Joseph Martinez, MD, Associate Dean for Medical Education and Learning Environment and Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, will receive the 2022 Excellence in Medical Student Career Advising Faculty Advisor Award given by Careers in Medicine, the career-planning program of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). The award recognizes Dr. Martinez's accomplishments and commitment as an advisor to helping students fulfill their career goals and will be presented in November at the AAMC annual meeting in Nashville.
Rajabrata Sarkar, MD, PhD, Professor and Vice Chair for Clinical Operations, Department of Surgery, Division Head, Vascular Surgery, Director, Faculty Group Practice Operations, was awarded a Technology Advancement Award by the Office of Technology Transfer for the technology that he presented at the July 20th Medical Device Prototype Sprint pitch presentation in August.
Robert Schwarcz, PhD, Professor, Department of Psychiatry, is the recipient of the 2022 Lieber Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Schizophrenia Research. The Prize was established in 1987 by the late Stephen and Connie Lieber, global champions of psychiatric research. It is one of the most coveted recognitions in the field. Dr. Schwarcz is the sole recipient of the 2022 Lieber Prize, which was presented to him at the BBRF International Awards Dinner on October 28, 2022, in New York City.
New Faculty & Appointments
Sarah McAvoy, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, was appointed in September as Vice Chair for Education. Dr. McAvoy currently serves and will continue as Program Director for the Radiation Oncology Medical Residency Program. In the newly created Vice Chair for Education role, she will work to sustain and expand the department’s educational infrastructure and serve as the central education contact across six practice sites, including outreach to undergraduates, medical students, residents, and postgraduates, as well as for continuing medical education opportunities within the department.
Kyle Fischer, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and Health Policy and Leadership Fellowship Director, has been appointed to the new Connecticut Commission on Community Gun Violence Intervention and Prevention, established by state legislation in May 2022. She attended the new commission’s first meeting via Zoom on September 6. Dr. Fischer is policy director for the national nonprofit Health Alliance for Violence Intervention.
New members of the Department of Emergency Medicine who joined the faculty this summer are Michael Baranowski, MD; Adam James, MD; Gina Jordan, MD; Samantha King, MD; Chloe Renshaw, MD; Germaine Rival, DO, MPH; Kelli Robinson, MD; Lucas Sjeklocha, MD; and Kathleen Stephanos, MD. Drs. Jordan, King, Sjeklocha, and Stephanos completed their residencies at UMEM.
The Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science had two Doctor of Physical Therapy students (SPT) run for the national office of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy - student Special Interest Group (AAOMPT sSIG). Congratulations to incoming President David Dellota, SPT '24, and Vice President Michael Gentile, SPT '24. They will take the baton from Vice President John Morgan, SPT '23, who helped spearhead the post-pandemic revitalization of the AAOMPT sSIG.

Colleen Hughes Driscoll, MD, Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics, was interviewed by Reuters Health on the impacts of rooming-in practices and neonatal falls. The article focuses on Dr. Hughes Driscoll’s recent publication in Pediatrics, “In-Hospital Neonatal Falls: An Unintended Consequence of Efforts to Improve Breastfeeding.” Richard Lichenstein, MD, Professor, also with the Department of Pediatrics, was the senior author of the publication.
Emerson Wickwire, PhD, Professor, Departments of Psychiatry and Medicine, was interviewed on WTOR radio station on August 31, 2022. The topic of the interview was sleep at the start of a new school year. He also was interviewed on FOX 45 Facebook Live’s “Back to School Headquarters” edition on September 1, 2022. The topic of the interview was sleep for children and parents at the start of a new school year.
Grants & Contracts
Kathryn Barry, PhD, MPH, Assistant Professor, Department of Epidemiology & Public Health, was awarded $30,000 for “Neighborhood Social Factors and Prostate Tumor Aggressiveness among African American and European American Men” by the American Cancer Society.
James Doub, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Institute of Human Virology, (IHV) was awarded $1.3 million from NIH’s National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) with his Co-PI Ken Urish, MD, PhD, at the University of Pittsburgh, to study “The Role of Teichoic Acid Glycosylation in Phage Activity and Selection in an Ongoing FDA Phase I/II Clinical Study of Bacteriophage Therapy in Chronic Periprosthetic Joint Infection.” This project will study how changes in the sugar content of Staphylococcal aureus’ cell wall impacts bacteriophage (viruses that kill bacteria) ability to kill bacteria with the ultimate goal being to create effective, reproducible bacteriophage therapeutics to reduce the disability and death associated with infections in and around prosthetic joints, while also applying their findings to antibiotic-resistant infections.
Martin Flajnik, PhD, Professor, Department of Microbiology & Immunology, and University of Chicago colleague Erin Adams, were awarded a five-year $586.000 NIH grant for NIAID entitled “Determining the Origins of Nonclassical Class I Molecules through Molecular and Functional Approaches.”
Rao Gullapalli, PhD, Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, received a three-year $1,025,802 USAMRAA/Geneva Foundation Contract for “Comprehensive Assessment of Blast Traumatic Brain Injury in a Gyrencephalic Species: Biomechanical, MRI, Behavioral and Neuropathological Characterizations.”
Rei Len, PhD, Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, received $2,569,436 R01 four-year funding from the NIH National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering as PI/PD lead for “eXtended Modular ANthropomorphic (XMAN) Phantom for Imaging and Treatment Optimization in Radiotherapy.”
Yajie Liang, MB, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine received a two-year $463,124 R21 grant from NIA for “Shedding Light on Functional Heterogeneity of Dementia-related Alpha-synuclein Strains.”
Dirk Mayer, Dr rer nat, Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, received a two-year $193,617 R21 grant from NIDDK for “Metabolic Imaging of Hyperpolarized 13C Pyruvate in Polycystic Kidney Disease.”
Marco Venniro, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Anatomy & Neurobiology (corresponding mPI); Mary Kay Lobo, PhD, Professor, Department of Anatomy & Neurobiology (mPI); and Seth Ament, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry (mPI, IGS); were awarded a new NIDA grant, "Genomic Profiling Mediating the Protective Effect of Social Reward on Opioid Craving."
Piotr Walczak, MD, PhD, Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, received a five-year $2,986,702 R01 grant from NIDA for “Image-guided Intra-arterial Administration of Antibody-releasing Glial Progenitors to Control the HIV CNS Reservoir.”
The Department of Emergency Medicine will partner with the Center for Substance Abuse Research (CESAR) at the University of Maryland College Park to carry out expanded fentanyl testing in hospitals statewide under a Maryland Department of Health program award of $396,090 for FY2023. The grant follows findings published by Zachary D.W. Dezman, MD, MS, Associate Professor, and Bradford Schwartz, MD, Assistant Professor, both with the Department of Emergency Medicine, CESAR director Eric Wish, PhD, and colleagues that demonstrated a high prevalence of fentanyl detected in emergency departments.

Vasken Dilsizian, MD, Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, delivered an oral presentation entitled “F-18 FDG PET/CT: A New Tool to Image CIED/LVAD Infective Endocarditis,” at the 27th Annual Scientific Sessions of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, held in Orlando, FL, on September 9, 2022.
Martin Flajnik, PhD, Professor, Department of Microbiology & Immunology, along with National Institutes of Health (NIH) colleague Chaim Schramm, organized a three-day workshop in Dresden, Germany, entitled “Evolutionary Scales of the Immune System.”
Mary Rodgers, PT, PhD, FAPTA, FASB, FISB, Professor Emerita, Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, recently attended the 5th North American Congress on Biomechanics (NACOB), which was held in Ottawa, Canada, on August 21-25, 2022. NACOB meetings are joint meetings of the American Society of Biomechanics and the Canadian Society for Biomechanics. The 2022 meeting is the fifth time the groups have jointly met under the NACOB banner. During her attendance, she presided as Chair at the American Society of Biomechanics Council of Fellows (COF) business meeting. This was Dr. Rodgers' last meeting as the Chair of the COF.
Roger Stone, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, co-presented “EMS Quality Management: Cultivating a Culture to Improve Patient Outcome,” the keynote session of the Cranberry EMS Blitz Conference, which was held August 20-21, 2022, in Cranberry Township, PA. The Blitz is an annual two-day continuing education conference attended by about 200 EMS clinicians, educators, dispatchers, and administrators from western Pennsylvania and across the nation.
