Honors & Awards - January

Claire FraserClaire M. Fraser, PhD, the Dean E. Albert Reece Endowed Professor in the Department of Medicine and the Founding Director of the Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS), was ranked 196 in the United States among Top Female Scientists for 2023 by Research.com.

 

Muhammad Mohiuddin, MBBS, DSc (Hon), Professor of Surgery, and Director, Program in Cardiac Xenotransplantation, was honored in July 2023 with the DOGANA Lifetime Achievement Award 2023 from the Dow Graduates Association of North America (DOGANA) at the 2023 Annual Summer Meeting held in Dallas, TX.

 

Adam PucheAdam Puche, PhD, Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Neurobiology, was recently recognized as Outstanding Mentor at the 46th Medical Student Annual Awards Program.

 

 

Thelma Wright, MD, JD, MBA, Associate Professor and Vice Chair for Perioperative and Chronic Pain Management Services, Department of Anesthesiology, was recently nominated and appointed to the American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) Committee on Expert Witness Testimony and Review. Dr. Wright also continues to serve as Chair of the Medical Executive Committee at the UM Rehabilitation and Orthopedic Institute (UMROI), a position she has held since July 2022.

 


 

Honors & Awards - February

James GalenJames Galen, PhD, Professor, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, has developed technology that has allowed Irazú Oncology, a Baltimore-based therapeutics company, to receive seed funding from the Wexford SciTech Venture Fund and the University System of Maryland (USM) Momentum Fund, the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Abell Foundation, and leading healthcare angel investors, to create an outer membrane vesicle (OMV) cancer vaccines platform.

Linda Horn, PT, DScPT, MHS, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, has been awarded the Distinguished Fellow of the National Academies of Practice (NAP) in Physical Therapy. Being a Distinguished Fellow in NAP is an exceptionally high honor that acknowledges Dr. Horn’s outstanding achievements and recognizes her as a leader in both the profession and interprofessional care. She will be recognized as a member of the Class of 2024 and receive a distinctive NAP medallion in an induction ceremony at the NAP Annual Meeting & Forum on March 15-16, 2024, in Jacksonville, FL.

Michael KallenMichael Kallen, MD, Associate Professor; Amy Plotkin, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor; and Madhurima Koka, MD, PhD, Associate Professor, all with the Department of Pathology, were the recipients of the UMMC/UMB Innovation Challenge Award. This competition offered several opportunities for awards up to $125K. This competition builds off our shared UMMS value discovery, to submit ideas for improved solutions and novel practices that advance health outcomes for our patients, families, or team members located across the Downtown and/or Midtown Campuses.

Anshu Kumari, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellow in Dr. Vivek Garg's Lab, Department of Physiology, was awarded an American Heart Association Fellowship for investigating Cardiolipin Modulation of Mitochondrial Calcium Uniporter in Barth Syndrome.

 

Paul LuethyPaul Luethy, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Pathology, was honored in January 2024 with an Extraordinary Service Award in recognition of his service to Microbiology Spectrum, a highly respected peer-reviewed research journal published by the American Society for Microbiology.

 

 


 

Appointments - January

Linda Horn, PT, DScPT, MHS, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, has been appointed the Chair of the American Council of Academic Physical Therapy’s (ACAPT) Advocacy Committee.

 

Muhammad Mohiuddin, MBBS, DSc (Hon), Professor, Department of Surgery, and Director, Program in Cardiac Xenotransplantation, was elected by The Transplantation Society on October 29, 2023, to serve as President, International Xenotransplantation Association (IXA), from 2023-2025.

 

 


 

Appointments - February

Michael GrassoMichael Grasso, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor, Departments of Medicine and Emergency Medicine, is the new program director for Clinical Informatics, a program of the UMB Graduate School offering advanced training for physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, pharmacists, biologists, and computer scientists leading to an MS degree or a graduate certificate in Clinical Informatics and Data Science.

Andrea Meredith, PhD, Professor, Department of Physiology, was appointed to a two-year term on the Patient Engagement Collaborative (PEC), a working group for a joint project between the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Clinical Trials Transformation Initiative (CTTI) that discusses topics related to medical product regulation.

 

Erin Strovel, PhD, Associate Professor, Departments of Pathology and Pediatrics, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) for a six-year term beginning January 1, 2024.

 

Kelly Westlake, PT, MSc, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, has been appointed to serve on the American Council of Academic Physical Therapy (ACAPT) Task Force on Establishing and Sustaining a Culture of Research in Academic Physical Therapy. The purpose of the Task Force is to provide the tools that physical therapy programs can use to establish and sustain a research culture. Dr. Westlake will serve on the Task Force for 2024.

Omer Awan, MD, Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, was named a Scripps News Medical Contributor and is scheduled to appear every Wednesday night during primetime at 8:45 p.m. to discuss a topic in healthcare or public health.

 

Vasken Dilsizian, MD, Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, was interviewed virtually on December 5, 2023, for the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC) Interview Series on the subject of “Expanding Applications of Cardiac PET Beyond Perfusion Assessment: Its Role in Cardiac Device Infections.”

 

Cheyene FalatCheyenne Falat, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, discussed hypothermia and injury prevention in extreme cold weather in an interview with FOX45 Morning News on November 29, 2023, as Baltimore City issued its first Code Blue for extreme cold.  

 


Sarah LeeSarah Lee, MD, Instructor, Department of Emergency Medicine, was interviewed for the article “Why You Feel More Aches and Pains in the Cold Weather — And What You Can Do About It,” which was published November 23, 2023, by Fox News online and reprinted in the New York Post and on Yahoo News.

  • Dr. Campbell was also interviewed by Helio and appeared in the video “U.S. Experiencing Shortage of RSV Immunization” on November 18, 2023.
  • Additionally, Dr. Campbell was interviewed by Maryland Matters for the article “Doctors, Health Officials Advise Marylanders to Get Vaccinated Before Holiday Travel” on December 12, 2023.
     

Wilbur Chen, MD, MS, FIDSA, Professor, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, was featured by WMAR-ABC in their video news segment “New Clinical Trial Pays People with the Flu $1,900 to Get Others Sick” on January 4, 2024, and was featured by WYPR in their radio news interview “University of Maryland Embarking on First-of-its-kind Study on How Flu is Transmitted” on January 5, 2024.

  • Dr. Chen was also featured by WJZ in their news article “Catch the Flu for Money? University of Maryland School of Medicine Studies How Virus is Transmitted” on January 5, 2024.
  • Additionally, Dr. Chen was featured by WTOP-FM in their radio news segment about the EMIT2 Flu Transmission Study on January 6, 2024.
     

Kyle Fischer, MD, MPH, Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, was interviewed for an article about Medicaid funding for community-based violence prevention programs, “Gun Violence is a Plague. Could Medicaid Help?” The Washington Post and KFF Health News co-produced and published the story. He also was quoted in a follow-up story published on January 5, 2024, “States Begin Tapping Medicaid Dollars to Combat Gun Violence,” reporting that Maryland is one of seven states that have approved the use of Medicaid funds for gun violence prevention programs. Dr. Fischer serves as policy and advocacy director for The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention.

Matthew Laurens, MD, MPH, Professor, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, was interviewed on the Fox45 News Morning Show for the segment titled “Is It OK To Double Up? Getting Your COVID-19 And Flu Vaccines at Once” on December 1, 2023. He also was interviewed and quoted by Lead Stories in the article “Fact Check: Moderna Did NOT 'Confirm' That Its mRNA COVID-19 Vaccines Cause Cancer,” on December 11, 2023, and was interviewed and quoted by Knowable Magazine in the article “Top Science Stories of 2023,” on December 21, 2023.

Kathleen NeuzilKathleen Neuzil, MD, MPH, FIDSA, the Myron M. Levine, MD, DTPH Professor of Vaccinology and Director of the Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD), was quoted in STAT on December 5, 2023, in an article titled “Is mRNA Technology the Right Fit for Flu Shots? Experts Aren’t So Sure.”

 


 

New Faculty - February

Rachel Reoli, PT, DPT, PhD, joined the Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science (PTRS) on January 2, 2024, as a core faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor. Dr. Reoli was previously an Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Johns Hopkins University. She is a board certified neurologic physical therapist with extensive experience. In addition, Dr. Reoli is a PhD graduate from the PTRS Physical Rehabilitation Science program. 

Marcel Lanza, PhD, joined the Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science on January 2, 2024, at the rank of Assistant Professor. Dr. Lanza previously held the appointment rank of Research Associate. In addition to teaching in both the DPT program and the Physical Rehabilitation Science PhD program, he will continue his research in the field of aging.

 


 

Awards, Grants & Funding - January

Matthew FriemanMatthew Frieman, PhD, Professor, and Lynda Coughlan, PhD, Assistant Professor, both with the Department of Microbiology & Immunology, along with Robert Ernst, PhD, Professor, Department of Microbial Pathogenesis at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (PI), received a two-year grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Center for Research on Influenza Pathogenesis and Transmission (CRIPT) at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine to study the “Enhancement of Influenza Virus H5 Vaccine Efficacy by a Novel BECC Adjuvant.”

  • Drs. Frieman and Coughlan also are co-PIs on a five-year, $9.5 million NIAID contract led by Dr. Ernst for development of vaccine adjuvants.
  • Dr. Frieman also received a two-year grant from the NIAID Center of Excellence for Influenza Research at St. Jude’s Hospital to study “The Role of ORF8 in SARS-CoV-2 Transmission.”

 


 

Awards, Grants & Funding - February

James CampbellJames Campbell, MD, MS, Professor, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, has been awarded a one-year, $842,775 clinical trial agreement from the National Cancer Institute/Leidos Biomedical Research to study “Mpox.” He also has been awarded a one-year, $566,435 clinical trial agreement from PPD/Moderna to study “Pediatric Cytomegalovirus” and a fourteen-month, $85,731 clinical trial agreement from PPD/Moderna to study “BabyCove.”

Niel Constantine, PhD, Professor, Department of Pathology, Institute of Human Virology, has been awarded $205,162 for 10 months from Family Health International 360 for the USAID Global Health Supply Chain Quality Assurance Program. This award supports the continuation of Dr. Constantine's work to evaluate HIV, hepatitis, syphilis, and other rapid test kits sent from international locations and manufacturers to determine if their performance characteristics meet manufacturers’ claims. Technical Assistance activities are provided also.

Alan Cross, PhD, Professor, and Sharon Tennant, PhD, Professor, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Heath, have been awarded a third European Patent for their invention entitled “Immunogenic Compositions” UMB Ref #:  RS-2017-003 (US). The patent has been validated in the following European countries: Austria (AT), Belgium (BE), Switzerland (CH) / Liechtenstein (LI), Germany (DE), Spain (ES), France (FR), Great Britain (GB), Ireland (IE), Italy (IT), Netherlands (NL), Sweden (SE). This invention is jointly owned with GlaxoSmithKline and Affinivax. This invention is licensed to GSK Biologicals SA.

Jose Lemme Dumit, PhD, Research Associate, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, has received a one-year, $99,922 Early Career Investigator Pilot Award from the Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Consortium (IDCRC) to study “Antibody-mediated Immunity to Shigella in the Human Gut to Inform Vaccine Efforts.”

 

Martha Francis, PhD, RN, Assistant Professor and a nurse practitioner in the Department of Radiation Oncology, along with Ian Kleckner, PhD, MPH, Associate Professor, School of Nursing, received a $15,000 one-year grant from the SON to support a project on “Phase 1 Feasibility Testing of Serious Illness Conversation Guide in Patients and Intimate Partner Dyads Living with Advanced Cancer." The grants are awarded for research focused on nurse-sensitive outcomes in hospital and community settings.

Karen KotloffKaren Kotloff, MD, Distinguished Professor, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, received a one-year, $220,006 research agreement from Syneos Health LLC/Novavax for “A Phase 2/3, Randomized, Double-Blinded Study to Evaluate the Safety and Immunogenicity of a Harmonized SARS CoV-2 rS Vaccine Booster Dose in Adults Previously Vaccinated with mRNA COVID-19 Vaccines” and received a one-year, $120,453 research agreement from PopVax, Ltd. for “PopVax.” She also received a one-year, $15,600 research agreement from Leidos for “NextGen.”

Myron M. Levine, MD, DTPH, Distinguished Professor, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, has been awarded a two-year, $1,285,620 grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to study “Samoa – Typhoid Fever Control Program 2023.”

 

Kathleen NeuzilKathleen Neuzil, MD, MPH, FIDSA, the Myron M. Levine, MD, DTPH Professor of Vaccinology and Director of the Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD), has been awarded a five-year, $2,357,382 contract from the National Institutes of Health to study “Development of a Multivalent Variant-proof Mucosal SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine.”

 

Marcela Pasetti, PhD, Professor, Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, has been awarded a one-year, $458,263 contract from the National Institutes of Health to study “SARS-CoV-2 Mucosal Antibody Assays.”

 

Stephen Thom, MD, PhD, Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, has been awarded a $117,000 grant from DURIP, the Defense University Research Instrumentation Program, to acquire digital polymerase chain reaction (PCR) apparatus for research funded by the Office of Naval Research.

  • Dr. Adler also presented “Resuscitating Your Chart: Leveling Up Your Critical Care Documentation” at the Michigan ACEP Straight Talk Reimbursement Conference, held in Troy, MI, on November 14, 2023.
     

Afrah Ali, MBBS, Assistant Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, presented an abstract on “Simulation-Based Assessment for the Emergency Medicine Milestones” and lectured on “The Deadly Rash!” and “Caring for the Psychiatric Patient Boarding in the Emergency Department” at the XIIth Mediterranean Emergency Medicine Congress held in Rhodes, Greece, September 7-10, 2023.

 

Howard Dubowitz, MB,ChB, MS, FAAP, Professor, Department of Pediatrics, presented a remote webinar on “Child Neglect: SEEK – An Approach to Prevention/Promotion” held at the University of Ferrara, Ferrara, Italy on November 28, 2023.

 

Jason FalveyJason Falvey, PT, DPT, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, was an invited panelist at the 2023 Paul B. Beeson Emerging Leaders in Aging-Related Research and Clin-STAR Annual Meeting. Dr. Falvey participated in a moderated session on the importance of diversity in research.
 

  • Dr. Falvey also presented a symposium titled "Novel Approaches and Outcomes to Investigate Recovery and Mobility after Hip Fracture" at the Gerontological Society of America’s (GSA) annual scientific meeting in Tampa, FL, from November 8-12, 2023.
     

Elisabeth Fassas, MD ‘23, presented “Public Health Interventions in the Emergency Department: A Framework for Evaluation” at a roundtable discussion held at the American Public Health Association Meeting and Expo in Atlanta, GA, on November 14, 2023. Co-authors from the Department of Emergency Medicine included Kyle Fischer, MD, MPH, and J. David Gatz, MD, both Assistant Professors; Dan Gingold, MD, MPH, Associate Professor; and Steve Schenkel, MD, Professor. Dr. Fassas is now a resident in internal medicine at Duke University Medical Center.

Thomas GrissomThomas Grissom, MD, MSIS, FCCM, FASA, Professor, Department of Anesthesiology, was recently a Visiting Professor at the University of Miami where he delivered the Grand Rounds talk “My Favorite Trauma-Related Papers in the Last Year.” Dr. Grissom is also an assistant editor for the trauma section of Anesthesia and Analgesia and a member of the ASA Committee on Trauma. He also was recently nominated and appointed as one of two liaisons from the American Society of Anesthesiology to the Committee on Trauma, the American College of Surgeons.

David MarcozziDavid Marcozzi, MD, Clinical Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine and Associate Dean for UMMC Clinical Affairs, co-chaired the 30th Annual Health Services Leadership Awards lunch of the Baltimore Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, which was held at the Baltimore Hilton on December 7, 2023. Dr. Marcozzi also received the Health Services Leadership Award in 2022.

 

Amal Mattu, MD, Professor and Vice Chair, Department of Emergency Medicine, delivered a virtual lecture on “Pitfalls in the Diagnosis of ACS” at the Trauma, Emergency, and Acute Medicine (TEAM) conference, held in Bydgoszcz, Poland, on December 1, 2023. Dr. Mattu also lectured on “Acute Pericarditis: What We Weren’t Taught” at the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians Digital Monthly Grand Rounds on November 30, 2023, and was an invited speaker on professional development and women in emergency medicine at Educational Rounds for the Department of Emergency Medicine, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Elizabeth ParkerElizabeth Parker, PhD, RD, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science, was a co-author on two poster presentations "Social Isolation and Diet Quality Among U.S. Adults with a Disability in NHANES, 2013-2018" and "Whole Health(y) Aging With Gerofit: The Development of a Pilot Wellness Program for Older Veterans" at the Gerontological Society of America (GSA), which held its annual scientific meeting in Tampa, FL, November 8-12, 2023. GSA is the oldest and largest interdisciplinary organization devoted to research, education, and practice in the field of aging.

  • Dr. Parker also was a co-author of the poster presentation titled, "Efficacy of Malnutrition Screening Among Older Veterans at an Urban VA Hospital," which was presented by Sarah Cassatt, MS, RDN, CNSC, a part-time graduate student in the UMB/UMBC Gerontology program. Dr. Parker is a co-chair for Sarah's dissertation.
     

Justin RichardsJustin Richards, MD, Associate Professor, Department of Anesthesiology, was a Visiting Professor at the Department of Orthopedics at Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville, SC, for its Edward Bray III, MD Visiting Professor Lecture series. Dr. Richards will also be giving Grand Rounds at the University of Miami.

 

Michael WintersMike Winters, MD, Professor and Vice Chair, Department of Emergency Medicine, delivered several talks at the Emergency Medicine and Pharmacology for Primary Care MCE Conference held in Orlando, FL, November 10-12, 2023, titled “Updates in Cardiac Arrest,” “Clinical Pearls from the Recent Literature,” “My Master Class: Anaphylaxis,” “Avoiding Pitfalls in Back Pain Emergencies,” “Evidence-Based ENT Emergencies,” and “When Time Matters … Deadly Rashes.”

  • Dr. Winters also gave Emergency Medicine Grand Rounds at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL, on November 27, 2023, as well as talks titled “Bedside Resuscitation Leadership,” “What’s New in Cardiac Arrest?,” and “Post-Arrest Interventions That Save Lives!”
     

Members of the Department of Radiation Oncology were invited participants and lecturers at the meeting on FLASH Radiotherapy and Particle Therapy, which was held in Toronto, Canada, December 5-7, 2023.

 

  • Kevin Byrne, MSc, Research Medical Physicist, presented “Real-Time, Target-Proximal In Vivo FLASH Dosimetry Using an Inorganic Scintillation Detector,” which was named a best abstract for the meeting. Byrne also served as a co-chair of a session on “Quality Assurance and Real-Time Dosimetry for FLASH RT Measurement.”
  • Kai Jiang, PhD, Assistant Professor, presented "A High-throughput Platform for Murine Subcutaneous Tumor Irradiation with UHDR Electron Beam at Variable Dose Rates.”
  • Sina Mossahebi, PhD, Associate Professor, presented “Combining Proton Flash and Spatially Fractionated Radiotherapy ― Initial Dosimetric Characterization.”
  • Yannick Poirier, PhD, Assistant Professor, presented "Consensus Recommendations from the FlashForward Consortium FLASH Radiation Safety Working Group."

He also was a reviewer for the Scientific Review Group 2024/01 ZAI1 CAB-M, International Centers of Excellence for Malaria Research, National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, on November 13-15, 2023, and was a Scientist Reviewer for NIAID protocol “Assessment of Pregnancy Outcomes Through Demographic Surveillance and Prospective Data Collection at a Health Facility in Kalifabougou, Mali,” on November 13-15, 2023.

  • Dr. Laurens also presented “Test-Negative Design: An Efficient Method to Assess Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine Effectiveness,” at the 13th International Conference on Typhoid and other Invasive Salmonelloses on December 5, 2023, in Kigali, Rwanda.
     

Kathleen NeuzilKathleen Neuzil, MD, MPH, FIDSA, the Myron M. Levine, MD, DTPH Professor of Vaccinology and Director of the Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD), presented the (remote) keynote “What’s New with Respiratory Viruses? Influenza, COVID-19 and RSV” to the Aotearoa New Zealand Immunisation Conference 2023 on November 15, 2023. She was an invited presenter at the Online NFID Clinical Vaccinology Course, where she spoke on “Influenza Vaccination Recommendations Across the Lifespan,” on November 15, 2023.

  • Dr. Neuzil also presented “Bridging the Gap: Environmental and Sero-Surveillance for Estimating Typhoid Burden and Supporting Vaccine Introductions,” at the 13th International Conference on Typhoid and other Invasive Salmonelloses on December 5, 2023, in Kigali, Rwanda.

Direct-to-Triage protocol and process that get our units back on the street.” Dr. Stone also presented a poster at the meeting: “Limited Use of Prehospital Ultrasound to Answer a Binary Question: Transportation versus Termination Decisions Based on an Ultrasound of Carotid Artery During Prehospital Cardiac Arrest Resuscitation.”

The 19th University of Maryland Annual Radiation Oncology Symposium: Best Of was held on January 11, 2024, at the SMC Campus Center in Baltimore. More than 160 in-person and virtual attendees participated in the CME-accredited educational program intended to provide a review of practice-changing studies featured at major national meetings and in peer-reviewed journals over the past year. 

Led by co-directors William F. Regine, MD, Professor, and Sarah McAvoy, MD, Associate Professor, the half-day course brought together leading experts from the University of Maryland and physicians from institutions across the country. Department of Radiation Oncology faculty included:

Community Service - February

Department of Emergency Medicine faculty and residents hosted CURE Scholar ninth graders for a two-hour Introduction to Medicine session on December 9, 2023. The scholars received stethoscopes and learned to use them, and were introduced to tourniquet use, point-of-care ultrasound, and emergency radiology topics. Mercedes Torres, MD, Clinical Associate Professor, and Robert Dunn, MD, Resident, organized the session, and several medical students, residents, and EM faculty served as preceptors.
