University of Maryland School of Medicine Second-Year Medical Student Receives 2023 Gold Foundation Student Summer Fellowship

University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) medical student, Alexis Vetack, MS2, is one of 13 students selected as 2023 Gold Student Summer Fellows by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation. Fellows will spearhead research and service projects that amplify humanistic healthcare and help address health inequities that involve direct interaction with patients and community members. The fellowship provides the opportunity for medical students to deepen their understanding of health inequities and direct attention toward community health needs in underserved populations.

UMSOM Bids Farewell to the Class of 2023

Graduates in the Class of 2023 at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) gathered at the Hippodrome Theatre on May 18, along with their families, friends, and School of Medicine faculty and staff, to celebrate their official transition from medical students to physicians. UMSOM Dean Mark T. Gladwin, MD, Vice President for Medical Affairs, University of Maryland, Baltimore, and the John Z. and Akiko K. Bowers Distinguished Professor, presided over the ceremony marking his first UMSOM graduation as the 31st dean of the School. The graduating class of 140 physicians received their doctoral hoods in front of hundreds of family members, friends, faculty, and staff. Several graduates earned combined MD/Masters and MD/PhD degrees.

UMSOM’s IHV RIIS Partners with Baltimore Safe Haven Organization to Provide Community-Based Clinical Care to Sexual and Gender Minorities

The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Institute of Human Virology’s (IHV) Research Initiative on Infectious Disease and Substance Use (RIIS) engages marginalized populations in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., bringing together endemic infections and substance abuse treatment in a community-based setting with the goal of establishing research programs.

UMSOM IHV Researchers Uncover How HIV Damages the Liver Despite Virus Suppression by Antiretroviral Therapy

More than 30 million people live with HIV infection with some 73% on antiretroviral therapy (ART), which has allowed those infected to live longer. Although the infected’s virus levels are suppressed, current therapies do not fully restore health and chronic inflammation persists.

17th Annual Student Awards Ceremony Recognizes Top UMSOM Medical Graduates

On May 17, 2023, the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) held its 17th annual Student Awards Ceremony & Dinner at the Baltimore Marriott Inner Harbor at Camden Yards. Fourth-year medical students in the Class of 2023 were recognized for their superior academic performance and modeling extraordinary humanism, compassion, and integrity over their four-year tenure in medical school. The event also publicly recognized generous donors, many being alumni, faculty, and friends, whose financial support afforded students with the various awards.

University of Maryland School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins University Expand Primary Care Celebration

What initially started as a celebratory reception for the Primary Care Track (PCT) elective at UMSOM has expanded into a much larger partnership with the Johns Hopkins University’s (JHU) Primary Care Consortium. The Academic Primary Care Symposium (APCS), first launched in 2016, started as a collaboration between the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s (UMSOM) Departments of Family and Community Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics to celebrate the interest and success of UMSOM medical students enrolled in the PCT elective.
