UMSOM Student-Led Groups Celebrate Black History Month with Inspiring Cultural Events
February marks the start of Black History Month in the United States. The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) values the opportunity to reflect on Black history – the achievements, struggles, and triumphs. In celebration of Black legacy, student-led groups at UMSOM have planned numerous opportunities throughout the month for students who wish to engage in diverse and cultural activities happening across the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) campus.
The United Students of African Descent (USAD), a campus-wide organization designed to increase unity and strengthen inter-professional relationships among students of African descent, is hosting several educational, cultural, and social programs this month.
“The Black History Month events planned this year are important to the UMSOM student body because they allow students to learn more about Black history and connect with each other and alumni of African descent. We hope these events foster friendships and meaningful connections for both students and faculty across the UMB community,” said Jaelyn Edwards, SPT ’24, DPT ’24, President of USAD.
Upcoming event:

6-8 p.m. | SMC Ballroom

The UMSOM chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is planning to host a “Mental Health and Race in Medicine” panel discussion on Monday, February 20, 2023, from 12 to 1 p.m. in collaboration with White Coats for Black Lives (WC4BL). UMSOM students will receive Zoom information via email.
“This event provides a safe space for underrepresented students in medicine to hear from those who have walked in their shoes on how to maintain your own mental health while navigating in medical spaces as a minority,” said Ijeoma Obizoba, MD Candidate ’25, Former President of SNMA at UMSOM.
