Deanna L. Kelly, PharmD, BCPP, Invested as the Dr. William and Carol Carpenter Professor of Psychiatry for Mental Illness Research

Members of the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) community, joined by an audience of family members, friends and distinguished guests, recently gathered in Westminster Hall to witness the installation of Deanna L. Kelly, PharmD, BCPP, Professor of Psychiatry at UMSOM and Affiliate Professor in the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy (UMSOP), as the inaugural Dr. William and Carol Carpenter Professor of Psychiatry for Mental Illness Research. The endowed professorship was named in honor of William T. Carpenter, Jr., Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry at UMSOM and past Director of the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center (MPRC), and his wife Mrs. Carol Carpenter, an award-winning artist. The generosity of Dr. and Mrs. Carpenter and many friends, colleagues, trainees, and organizations funded the professorship.

Leading Physician Scientist Rozalina McCoy, MD, MS, Named Co-chair of the American Diabetes Association's (ADA) Professional Practice Committee

Rozalina McCoy, MD, MS, Associate Professor of Medicine and Associate Division Chief for Clinical Research in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition, has been asked to co-chair the American Diabetes Association's (ADA) Professional Practice Committee. The Committee is responsible for overseeing the annual publication of the standards of care used both nationally and internationally for diabetes management. Appointment is based on excellence in clinical practice and research.

Newly Launched Musculoskeletal Physiology Service Center Strengthens the School of Medicine’s Shared Research Infrastructure

Launched on July 1, 2023, the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s (UMSOM) Musculoskeletal Physiology Service Center, is dedicated to advancing musculoskeletal research and offers comprehensive musculoskeletal phenotyping tailored to mouse and rat models. Organized in the Department of Orthopedics, these services are available to the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) community and partnering institutions in collaboration with expert faculty/staff. Projects can be run as a fee-for-service or fee-for-access to equipment following training.

Leading Healthcare Administrator Colin Semper Named Chief of Strategic Operations at UM Faculty Physicians, Inc.

William F. Regine, MD, FACR, FASTRO, FACRO, President of University of Maryland Faculty Physicians, Inc. (FPI), along with Rachel L. Hoover, MS, MBA, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer for FPI, announced today that Colin G. Semper, MBA, will serve as the new Chief Strategic Operations and Business Development Officer and interim Chief Operations Officer for FPI.

Biotechnology CEO and Inventor of SiriusXM Satellite Radio Martine Rothblatt to Deliver Graduation Address to the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s 215th Graduating Class

University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Dean Mark T. Gladwin, MD, announced today that Martine Rothblatt PhD, JD, MBA, Chairperson and CEO of United Therapeutics, and inventor of SiriusXM Satellite Radio, will deliver the keynote address for this year’s graduating medical student class. The UMSOM MD graduation ceremony will take place at the Hippodrome Theatre on Thursday, May 16, 2024. The ceremony will begin at 1:00 pm. Details for faculty members are here. The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) held its 17th Annual Diversity Dinner and Celebration: Shaping Inclusive Excellence in Medicine event on February 24, 2024, at the M&T Bank Exchange. The annual event honors the School’s diversity efforts by recognizing those who have helped increase diversity in the field of medicine, while raising funds in support of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, along with programming and scholarships.

Leading Neuroscientist Mary Kay Lobo, PhD, Named Vice Chair for Trainee and Faculty Development in the Department of Neurobiology

Asaf Keller, PhD, the Donald E. Wilson Distinguished Professor and Chair in the Department of Neurobiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), has announced that Mary Kay Lobo, PhD, Professor of Neurobiology and Psychiatry, has been appointed to serve as the Vice Chair of Trainee and Faculty Development in the Department of Neurobiology. Her appointment began on January 22, 2024. Dr. Lobo’s colleague, Adam C. Puche, PhD, Professor of Neurobiology and Vice Chairman for Medical Education and Administration, will retain his title within the Department.

UM School of Medicine Professor Ashira Blazer Honored with The Art of Healing Award for Excellence in Lupus Care

New faculty member, Ashira Blazer, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) was recently honored with the “Art of Healing” award at the Harlem Fine Arts Show for her transformative impacts in lupus care. Her widely published research focuses on systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in African Ancestry patients. She studies both African ancestry-specific genetic risk factors for severe disease and the socioeconomic challenges facing Black patients with lupus. She works both domestically and in collaboration with rheumatologists in West Africa to understand the interplay between social and genetic risks in this sensitive population.

UM School of Medicine’s Esa Davis, MD, MPH, Selected Among 25 Black Marylanders to Watch by The Baltimore Sun

Esa M. Davis, MD, MPH, Professor in the Departments of Family & Community Medicine and Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), Senior Associate Dean for Populations and Community Medicine at UMSOM, and Associate Vice President for Community Health at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), was named a 25 Black Marylanders to Watch winner this year by The Baltimore Sun. The award recognizes extraordinary leaders who are working to positively impact the lives, health, education, and experiences of all Maryland residents. In celebration of Black History Month, Dr. Davis joins 24 other notables who were chosen by The Sun’s editors and reporters in recognition of their important contributions and the progress being made in their fields.

Calling All Students: UMB Seeking Student Tutors for Literacy Tutoring Program

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Academy of Lifelong Learning Literacy Tutoring Program is recruiting UMB students who are interested in providing structured literacy tutoring to youth from the West Baltimore community. The program, open to students in grades 1-5, is a highly structured, in-person program held on campus three times per week for 10 weeks.

UMSOM’s Senior Associate Dean Dr. Donna Parker Receives 2024 Champion of the Year Award for Mentoring Women in Academic Medicine

Donna L. Parker, MD, FACP, Professor of Medicine and Senior Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), has been named the recipient of the 2024 Champion of the Year Award presented by the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) UMBrella Advisory Board. The UMBrella Awards recognizes a member of the UMB community of any gender who serves as a role model in their commitment to championing women in academia and/or administration. The awards are given annually in three separate categories: On the Rise, Leading the Way, and Champion of the Year.

UM School of Medicine’s Veterinary Resources (VR) Unveils New Online Business Portal for Animal Operations

The mission of Veterinary Resources (VR) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) is to provide quality care for all research animals and maintain compliance with federal laboratory animal welfare regulations and guidelines. VR faculty veterinarians operate the animal resource program and ensure that all University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) researchers adhere to animal research protocols.
