Researchers identify “master regulator” gene that could lead to more effective treatment for patients with ovarian cancer

In a study co-led by the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), researchers have identified a “master regulator” gene, ZNFX1, that may act as a biomarker to help guide treatment in future clinical trials involving patients with therapy-resistant ovarian cancer, according to a study recently published in Cancer Research.

Researchers Reveal Key Brain Differences to Explain Why Ritalin Helps Improve Focus in Some More Than Others

Nearly 16 million American adults have been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but evidence suggests that more than 30 percent of them don’t respond well to stimulant medications like Ritalin and Adderall. A new clinical trial provides a surprising explanation for why this may be the case: There are individual differences in how our brains circuits are wired, including the chemical circuits responsible for memory and concentration, according to a new study co-led by the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) and performed at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center.

Internationally Recognized Vaccine Expert Dr. Paul Offit to Deliver Graduation Address to the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s 216th Graduating Class

Leading vaccine advocate Paul Offit, MD, an internationally recognized immunologist and virologist, will deliver the keynote address for this year’s graduating medical student class. He is best known as co-inventor of the rotavirus vaccine, RotaTeq, which is universally recommended for infants by the CDC and has been credited for saving hundreds of lives every day.

Susan Kinter Named as New President and CEO of the Maryland Medicine Comprehensive Insurance Program

Susan Kinter, BSN, JD, stepped into her new role at MMCIP on February 24 after serving in successive executive roles at the organization since 1998. In her new role, she will guide MMCIP in its core missions to ensure physician, staff, and patient safety across all the University of Maryland system member organizations and practice groups, as well as administering the Health Professional Liability Insurance Program for physicians and nurses.

UMSOM Rising Third-Year Medical Students Celebrate Transition to Clinical Care Training at Annual Student Clinician Ceremony

The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) celebrated 165 rising third-year medical students at the Annual Student Clinician Ceremony on March 4, as they prepare to begin their clinical care training. Over the next two years, students will transition from the classroom to the bedside to gain experience seeing patients through a wide variety of specialties within local healthcare organizations.

Meningococcal Vaccine Found to be Safe and Effective for Infants in Sub-Saharan Africa

University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) researchers helped conduct an important new global health study that found a vaccine that protects against five strains of meningitis prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa is safe and effective for use in young children beginning at 9 months of age. This study provided evidence that formed the basis for the World Health Organization’s (WHO) decision last year to recommend the pentavalent Men5CV meningitis vaccine for infants ages 9 months and older.

Innovative CT Scan Technique Could Improve Prognosis and Treatments for Head and Neck Cancers, New Research Suggests

About 60,000 new cases are diagnosed every year with one in five cases occurring in people younger than 55, according to the American Cancer Society. A new study provides insights that may eventually help oncologists better predict how the disease will respond to certain therapies, leading to improved survival outcomes for patients.

UM School of Medicine Surgeon-Scientist to Co-Lead Large International Clinical Trial to Determine Most Effective Treatment for Common Hip Fracture in Older Adults

Hip fractures in older adults can lead to serious complications, disability and even death. Traditionally, orthopaedic surgeons have repaired a common fracture of the upper part of the thigh bone, or femur, near the hip using screws and plates to piece together slightly separated pieces of bone. But many surgeons now treat these “minimally displaced” femoral neck fractures by replacing the hip joint with a metal implant.

Owonikoko, MD, PhD, and University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Department of Surgery Chair, Christine Lau, MD, MBA, have announced that Jeremy L. Davis, MD, will serve as the new Surgical Oncology Lead for UMGCCC and Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology in the Department of Surgery at UMSOM. Dr. Davis is a nationally recognized surgical oncologist and leader in gastric cancer research.

UMMS Rolls Out Virtual 'NEST' to Support Bedside Care Teams in Labor and Delivery Units Across the System

The University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) has launched NEST (Neonatal Outcomes Impacted by Escalation Safety Telemetry), a groundbreaking remote fetal monitoring center that offers continuous, real-time monitoring of critical elements of labor and delivery across System hospitals. NEST is led by a medical director and team of highly specialized nurses who bring more than 200 years of combined experience in safely delivering thousands of babies.

Presenting a Path Forward for Future Genetically-Modified Pig Heart Transplants: Lessons Learned from Second Patient

Continuing significant advancements in the field of xenotransplantation, surgeon-scientists from the University of Maryland School of Medicine provided an extensive analysis on the second patient in the world to receive a genetically-modified pig organ. Lawrence Faucette, 58, received a pig heart at the University of Maryland Medical Center in 2023 to treat his end-stage heart failure. He lived for 40 days before choosing to forgo additional treatment after the transplant began to fail due to rejection.

Medical Student Researchers Win Recognition at 47th Annual UMSOM Medical Student Research Day event

On November 12 and 13, the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) hosted the 46th annual Medical Student Research Day), where more than 140 UMSOM students presented posters on their research in basic, clinical, translational, and population sciences. Jointly sponsored by the UMSOM Chapter of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and the Office of Student Research in the Dean’s Office, the event marked an opportunity for medical students to both exhibit their research before expert faculty judges and learn from working physician-scientists how to balance research alongside clinical practice.
