Geriatric Psychiatry & Adult Acute Care

Our Mission

The Division of Geriatric Psychiatry and Adult Acute Care helps older patients enhance their quality of life and overall function by diagnosing and treating psychiatric disorders to ensure achievement of their full potential. Our mission includes involving and educating family and friends, who play an important role in overall well-being.

Training and Education

We provide training in Geriatric Psychiatry to medical students and psychiatry residents, primarily in our Geriatric Psychiatry and Adult Psychiatry inpatient units.

We also offer electives to senior students and residents in our inpatient, outpatient, and electroconvulsive therapy services.

Clinical Services

Geriatric Psychiatry Inpatient Unit

We collaboratively care for older patients who have both psychiatric and significant medical problems, treating depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia, as well as the behavioral complications of various neuropsychiatric illnesses including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Lewy Body Dementia, and brain vascular disease.

We also provide inpatient electroconvulsive therapy, a highly effective treatment for some psychiatric treatment-resistant disorders.

Please contact the Psychiatric Admissions and Referral Center (PARC) at 410-328-6231 to make a referral.

Geriatric Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic

We provide expert consultation and longitudinal care for patients 60 and older with a wide variety of conditions, including the behavioral complications of various neuropsychiatric illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Lewy Body Dementia, and brain vascular disease. Clinic staff includes faculty psychiatrists as well as nurses.

Please contact the clinic at 410-328-8415 for more information.

Senior Outreach Service (SOS)

Senior Outreach Service (SOS) is a Baltimore City-funded home visit program serving Baltimore City residents 65 and older who have a psychiatric illness and are unwilling or unable to receive services at a clinic. A psychiatric nurse leads the program. A geriatric psychiatrist is available for assessment and medication management.

Please call 410-328-8415 for more information about the Senior Outreach Service.

Advanced Depression Treatment Center (ADepT)

Our Advanced Depression Treatment Center (ADepT) offers psychiatric and psychopharmacological assessments (second opinions), as well as transcranial magnetic stimulation treatments.

ADepT also provides electroconvulsive therapy, a highly effective and safe treatment for people with severe depression and other severe psychiatric illnesses that have not been relieved by traditional treatments, including medication and psychotherapy.
