Kelly was born and raised in Los Angeles and moved to New York to attend college, graduating with a bachelor of arts in English Literature from New York University. After college, she got married, moved to North Carolina, and enlisted in the U.S. Army as a finance specialist. She began her graduate studies at Webster University's campus on Fort Bragg, NC, which culminated in the creation of an Emergency Action Plan for the Cumberland County Health Department. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, she focused on raising her two young boys and began developing her interest in women's health.

Kelly volunteered her time as a La Leche League Leader while attending births as a certified birth doula and birth center birth assistant. At the same time, she also taught Bradley Natural Childbirth Classes. Through this experience, she decided to become a Certified Nurse-Midwife. To that end, she became a registered nurse through the nursing program at Northern Virginia Community College and earned a master's degree in midwifery from the Frontier Nursing University.

After graduating midwifery school, she worked for nine years as a full-scope midwife, attending births at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. During that time she completed a Doctorate of Nursing Practice from Frontier, with a clinical focus on evaluation, treatment and follow up for patients with perinatal mood disorders. She also earned the International Board Certified Lactation Certification (IBCLC).

Kelly currently volunteers her time as current Chair, with the Monetary Investment for Lactation Consultant Certifications (MILCC), the non-profit scholarship arm of the International Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE), after having volunteered six years as a IBLCE board member, serving in roles as Board Treasurer and Chair of Exam.
