Dr. Turner is a professor of surgery with tenure at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and chief of surgery at the Baltimore Veterans Affairs Maryland Health Care System in Baltimore.

Douglas J. Turner MD is a magna cum laude Chemistry graduate of Bucknell University.  He earned his doctor of medicine from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed his Surgical Training at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he also completed training in Surgical Critical Care.  Dr. Turner returned to Baltimore in 2001 to the University of Maryland School of Medicine and The Baltimore VA Medical Center.  Here he has practiced Endocrine Surgery and has been an invited speaker on thyroid and parathyroid diseases at many local and national conferences, and has authored 14 chapters in major surgical textbooks.  He has been awarded several teaching awards from Surgical Residents and Medical Students through the University of Maryland School of Medicine, as well as induction into AOA.   He has been awarded a Research Career Development Award through the Department of Veterans Affairs and has received 3 VA MERIT awards  to enable him to perform his research on sphingolipid regulation of intestinal barrier permeability, which has resulted in 68 peer-reviewed publications.  He has also served on the Federal Advisory Committee for Scientific Merit Review Board for the Surgery section.  He is active in process improvement and has a Black Belt in Lean Six Sigma Certification.  He is currently Professor of Surgery with tenure at the School of Medicine and Chief of Surgery at the Baltimore VA Medical Center.
