Biosketch
Dr. Smith is an infectious disease physician and a public health researcher. Her research focuses on multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) and infection prevention in healthcare settings. More specifically, she collaborates with state public health partners to identify and respond to outbreaks of MDROs in healthcare facilities, including nursing homes.
In addition, she conducted exposure investigations on COVID-19 positive patients and helped used genomic sequencing to clarify transmission pathways among various individuals. She is also a member of the Maryland Statewide Prevention and Reduction Collaborative (SPARC) helping to organize weekly seminars to facilitate learning about emerging pathogens and antibiotic stewardship between different healthcare facilities in the state, the state health department, and local academic institutions. Dr Smith’s goal is to continue to use clinical knowledge and applied epidemiology skills to work with different public health partners to improve infection prevention in nursing homes.
