David B. Schwartz, MB,BCh

Dr. David Schwartz graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand Medical School in Johannesburg, South Africa. He completed internships in Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics, Gynecology, and then his Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in the teaching hospitals of the University of Witwatersrand, following which he was appointed to the teaching Faculty.

Thereafter in the United Kingdom, he served both post-graduate Residency and Fellowship training experiences in Maternal Fetal Medicine & Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Nuffield Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Oxford University and then the Basingstoke District and General Hospital in Berkshire, England.

Upon returning to South Africa, Dr. Schwartz was a Full-time member of the faculty in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Baragwanath Hospital. Subsequently he joined the part-time teaching faculty at the University of the Witwatersrand while pursuing private practice until the beginning of 1978.

In 1978 Dr. Schwartz relocated and joined the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine in Madison, Wisconsin. He served as a Fellow in Maternal Fetal Medicine and Faculty member and completed his United States Specialty Board Certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology and sub-specialty Board Certification in Maternal–Fetal Medicine. His Basic science research activities included the use of fetoscopy for prenatal diagnosis and the assessment of placental blood flow utilizing the sheep model. His clinical interests focused on diabetes in pregnancy and the regionalization of perinatal care.

From 1984 through 2000, Dr. Schwartz joined the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Sinai Hospital of Detroit, Michigan, the Faculty at Wayne State University and the Detroit Medical Center. During this time his leadership positions included: Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine, Department Chair, Residency Training Program Director and Chief of Obstetrics for the Northwest Region of the Detroit Medical Center (1998-99). His clinical and research interests included special programs for diabetes in pregnancy, multiple births, antepartum Surveillance and both undergraduate and Graduate education, serving as an examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. His academic appointments progressed to Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology and in 1998 he was the first recipient of the endowed Srere Chair in Perinatal Medicine, awarded by the Detroit Medical Center and Wayne State University.

From 2000 until July 2012 Dr. Schwartz served as the Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Residency Program Director at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore and Visiting Associate Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, from which he received Excellence in Teaching awards and the Volunteer Clinical Faculty Award by the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society in 2010.

In July 2012 Dr. Schwartz was appointed to the Dean’s Office in the School of Medicine at the University of Maryland as the Director of Clinical Affairs for Special Programs, and Clinical Professor of Maternal Fetal Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Schwartz’s responsibilities include: Service Excellence for the FPI faculty practice sites; Faculty Physician-Patient Communication enhancement; Ambulatory Electronic medical record oversight and Meaningful Use compliance; the development of an Electronic Medical Record Physician Builder program; Patient Safety and Risk Mitigation, and both Medical Student and Resident teaching.
