Biosketch

April Rectanus, EdD, is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and has her master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and doctoral degree in Education specializing in counseling. At the University of Maryland, she is the director of the Care Clinic which provides mental health services to victims of child maltreatment and provides training to other professionals on child maltreatment. Since joining the Care Clinic in 2007, Dr. Rectanus has created a training program for graduate students and provided counseling to clients and supervision services to staff and students. Dr. Rectanus also provides clinical supervision and consultation services to therapists in other settings and is an advisor to doctoral level students in the EdD program at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Rectanus previously worked at St. Vincent’s Center with severely emotionally and behaviorally disturbed children and their families. Her work consisted of providing individual, group, and family therapy as well as case management services, crisis intervention, and some direct care experience. Dr. Rectanus has been working with maltreated children and their families since 2000 and has obtained extensive training on trauma and related topics. Dr. Rectanus incorporates play therapy and cognitive-behavioral approaches in her work and is trained in TF-CBT and EMDR. Also she has provided training and supervision to other clinicians. Her research focuses on training counselors to provide evidenced-based treatment to traumatized children and families.
