Dr. Nelson is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine in the division of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He serves as an Attending Physician at the University of Maryland Medical Center and the University of Maryland Capital Region Health.

Originally from New York City, Dr. Nelson attended the CUNY School of Medicine and earned a BS in Biomedical Education with Honors and a Minor in Bioethics. He then pursued his medical education at The NYU Grossman School of Medicine, focusing on promoting health equity for racial and ethnic minorities and other disadvantaged populations in medicine. As many of his patients experienced these inequities through systemic practices, he decided to engage in reform on larger level by focusing on healthcare operations as a means of improving access and the dissemination of medical care. Driven by this passion, he obtained a Master’s in Business Administration at The NYU Stern School of Business, specializing in Change Management & Operations.

Seeking a broader perspective on medicine, Dr. Nelson completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. There, he experienced firsthand the impact of COVID-19 on emergency departments and the disparities in healthcare delivery for critically ill patients from ethnic and racial minorities. This ignited his commitment to this population. Subsequently, Dr. Nelson completed a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Dr. Nelson remains dedicated to medical education, health equity, and healthcare management & operations. He has expertise in curriculum development, bedside education, and implementing a collaborative approach to patient-centered medicine. His accomplishments include optimizing electronic health records, improving clinical documentation, and refining patient flow while addressing structural inefficiencies leading to emergency department boarding of critically ill patients.
