Biosketch

I came to the University of Maryland in 1989, and I have been privileged to be an active and productive member of the Neurology Department, the Epilepsy Center and the Sleep Program for over 25 years.  For 14 years of those years I directed of the Maryland Epilepsy Center, and for 7 years I directed, as I still do, the nationally designated Veterans Affairs (VA) Northeast Epilepsy Center of Excellence and VA Epilepsy Center of Excellence in Baltimore, Maryland.  I recently chose to retire from full-time clinical activity and to remain on the faculty as a part-time clinical staff member, but I remain active in the Department of Neurology and Medical School in clinical care and research. My clinical activities focus on epilepsy and seizure care, including issues such as driving and epilepsy, management of a first seizure, and psychogenic seizures.  My research is largely clinical and includes those areas as well as status epilepticus and clinical drug trials for epilepsy and seizures.  I am also trained in and practice sleep medicine, and have a particular interest in neurosarcoidosis and related inflammatory neurological disorders.

Research/Clinical Keywords

First seizure evaluation and management, driving and epilepsy, seizures following cardiac arrest, nonconvulsive status epilepticus, psychogenic seizures, neurosarcoidosis, evoked potential clinical applications.
