Biosketch

Dr. Kanani completed his residency training in radiation oncology at the University of Maryland in 2004, where he served as Chief Resident for one year.  Dr. Kanani dedicated his final year of residency to research, specializing in brachytherapy and radiosurgery.

Since graduating residency, Dr. Kanani has worked as a Radiation Oncologist for Radiation Oncology Associates PC at the Inova Schar Cancer Institute in Virginia, where he served as the Co-Director of the Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) Program and Chief of Prostate Brachytherapy.  During his time there, he supported the development and implementation of a multi-D genitourinary clinical, as well as particle therapy, prostate brachytherapy, and spine radiosurgery programs.  From January 2017 through November 2019, he receiving his proton therapy training and provided radiation oncology services at MPTC while serving as an Inova Affiliate Physician.

Dr. Kanani treats all cancer types, with special interests in cancers of the prostate, brain, lung, esophagus, head and neck and gastrointestinal tract.  He is passionate about the way that the field of radiation oncology blends technology with medicine, offering a multi-D approach, and collaborating with other physicians to provide the best possible outcomes for patients.  As part of his cancer care plans, he feels it is important to provide emotional support to patients as they navigate their cancer care journeys.  He has been rated a Washington Top Doctor by Washingtonian (most recently in 2023), and has presented at a number of national meetings including ASTRO, ARS, RSNA, and ASCO.

Dr. Kanani completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Texas at Austin, where he graduated summa cum laude and earned his bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in biology.  Dr. Kanani received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School in 1999.  After graduating, he completed his one-year transitional internship at Pennsylvania State University before beginning his radiation oncology residency training at Maryland.
