Biosketch

I am a computational biologist, developing tools and implementing population genetics and evolutionary genomics approaches to understand evolution and transmission of infectious disease pathogens. My prime research focus is Malaria, specifically Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) Malaria, which represents a major health burden for developing countries. In addition to studying evolution of Pf and its populations, I identify targets to be validated for vaccine design and efficacy. I have been working in the field of Pf malaria for more than 10 years. During my graduate research I worked on characterizing Pf parasite populations of Cambodia in the context of anti-malarial drug resistance (Artemisinin derivatives and partner drugs) and identifying causative mutations and the metabolic pathways to which mutated genes belong. Since my training as a post-doctoral researcher, my research is focused on identifying selection pressure shaping the evolution of Pf populations and use of comparative genomics approaches to identify the genetic basis of a variety of Pf phenotypic traits. The developed analyses approaches are transferrable to study of other parasite genera, like Babesia.

I am involved in development and implementation of a variety of bioinformatics pipelines and have worked with high-throughput genomic and transcriptomics data from different malaria transmission settings to identify targets contributing to drug resistance mechanism, host-vector interactions and associated with vaccine-induced protection. I have exposure in the fields of epidemiology, immunology, biostatistics and analysis of sequencing data from clinical samples and vaccine trials.

My research objective is to understand the evolution and transmission of infectious disease pathogens worldwide.
