Education and Training

Dr. Corwell did his undergraduate work at Tufts University in Boston, MA, earning a B.S. and double majoring in Biology and Psychology. He then did a 2-year pre-doctoral fellowship at the National Institute of Neurologic Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) in Bethesda, MD, performing clinical research related to motor and visual cortex function in humans. He attended medical school at the University of Maryland graduating in 2002. He completed his Emergency Medicine Residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at Harvard Medical School (Boston, MA) in 2005. He then completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the University of Maryland in Baltimore in 2006.

Biosketch

Dr. Corwell joined the University of Maryland School of Medicine Faculty as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine upon completion of his fellowship in 2006. His clinical work was based at Washington County Emergency Department from 2006-2007, and he joined the faculty at Mercy Medical Center in 2007. Since 2007, he has also had an appointment in the Department of Orthopaedics. He has served as one of the team physicians for the University of Maryland Terrapins varsity athletes. Since 2013, he has been a sideline concussion consultant for the National Football League (NFL). He has served as a NFL Unaffiliated Neurotrauma Consultant (UNC) for the Baltimore Ravens since 2013 and has been the site director for the NFL Emergency Response Physician (ERP) program (formerly the Visiting Team Medical Liaison [VTML] program) for the Baltimore Ravens since 2015. In addition, Dr. Corwell served as the the NFL site director of the UNC program for the Washington Redskins from 2015 to 2017. 

Prior to medical school, Dr. Corwell did a 2-year pre-doctoral fellowship at the National Institute of Neurologic Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) in Bethesda, MD, performing clinical research related to motor and visual cortex functions in humans. Currently, Dr. Corwell’s research interests are related the intersection of his two areas of expertise, emergency medicine and sports medicine.
