Second Opinions

Request a Review

A second expert review should be your first step when confronted with a potentially life-changing diagnosis. Pathology reports may seem definitive, but they are a subjective interpretation made by a human being, and you deserve an expert review by one of our world-class academic pathologists.

You may request a review by a specific pathologist or service, but we routinely assign consults to the relevant subject matter expert in all cases.

If you are interested in a second opinion, please contact the pathology lab that made the primary diagnosis and request that your case be forwarded to our department. If you have trouble finding their contact information, please contact our office for assistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who will review the consult?
You may request review by a specific pathologist or service, but we routinely assign consults to the relevant subject matter expert in all cases.

How long does a consult report take?
Expect a report in less than 5 business days for most cases. Cases requiring extensive ancillary testing or cases in which we need to request additional materials may take longer. Outside consult reports will be faxed to you. Confirmation case reports will appear in the Epic EMR.

When will I get my case materials (slides and/or blocks) back?
All patient materials will be returned by FedEx to your lab a few days after the report has been verified. In some cases, the pathologist may request to keep one or more slides for teaching purposes. You may decline this request or send a recut slide in place of the original slide if you prefer.
