Pipeline Research Programs for Middle School through Graduate Students

The UM Scholars Program enables outstanding University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) undergraduates to become engaged in summer research projects led by top faculty in the University of Maryland School of Medicine at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). The program also introduces students to the M.D. degree program and various other graduate programs.

NSIP is a 10-week summer internship for undergraduate students interested in cancer research. The program provides integrated research, educational, and clinical experiences that emphasize the translation of laboratory discoveries into clinical applications and inspire the next generation of cancer researchers and physician-scientists.

The MiNDS program aims to boost the number of underrepresented minority (URM) students in neuroscience so that URM students can succeed in graduate school and beyond. The two-year program is open to undergraduate students at University of Maryland College Park, Lincoln University, and Temple University.

DICR aims to increase the number of cancer researchers that are underrepresented in the field. Undergraduate student interns participate in a 10-week program, during which they are mentored by investigators at top research institutions. Interns also engage in networking and career-development activities throughout the year.

The CURE Scholars Program is open to middle and high school students in West Baltimore. The program prepares students for rewarding and lucrative careers in research, health care, and STEM. Selected scholars participate in on-going mentoring, Saturday tutoring, and summer enrichment programs.

STAR-PREP is a year-long mentored research training program for recent college graduates from underrepresented groups in the biomedical sciences. The program prepares participants for entry into top graduate programs, and provides benefits beyond research training, including a salary, health benefits, and tuition remission.

B2D is a partnership between Towson University (TU), University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), and Johns Hopkins University (JHU). Master’s degree students from under-represented groups conduct their thesis research at TU, and conduct research at UMB and JHU in successive summers to gain immersive experiences at R1 institutions and to foster their progression toward PhD programs.
