MD/MSCI
MD/Master of Science in Clinical Informatics (MSCI)
The Doctor of Medicine (MD)/Master of Science in Clinical Informatics (MSCI) Dual Degree Program is designed to facilitate the integration of these two academic programs. The MSCI was created for physicians and other healthcare professionals who are committed to improving the quality of care provided to patients by analyzing information collected by healthcare organizations. The MSCI is organized around two 12-credit graduate certificates in Clinical Informatics and Data Science, along with hands-on practicums and conferences. The program is a joint effort between the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) and the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC).
Timeline & Program Completion
The dual degree program is completed in 5 years.
- The MD curriculum is spread over 4 years of study (years 1-3 and year 5).
- To obtain the MSCI degree, students earn an additional 34 credit hours, including 26 credits from MSCI core courses and 8 credits of electives.
- 6 credits during the first summer
- 20 credits in year 4 (the “step-out” year)
- 8 credits taken at the School of Medicine will count as electives toward both the MSCI and MD degrees
The MSCI requires successful completion of a Clinical Informatics Practicum, which will also satisfy the Scholarly Project requirement of the MD FRCT course.
