MD/MHA
The MD/Master in Health Administration (MD/MHA)
The Doctor of Medicine (MD)/Master of Health Administration (MHA) Dual Degree Program was created in recognition of the demand for both medical sciences and health system management expertise among health professionals early in their careers. The MHA prepares clinicians to manage complex health-related organizations including hospitals, health care systems, accountable care organizations, managed care organizations, rehabilitation and long-term care agencies, public health clinics, and federal and state agencies, among others. The University of Maryland School of Public Health at UMCP confers the Master of Health Administration (MHA).
Timeline & Program Completion
The dual degree program is completed in 5 years.
- The MD curriculum is spread over 4 years of study (years 1-3 and year 5).
- To obtain the MHA degree, students must earn an additional 46 credit hours.
- 6 credits during the first summer
- 28 credits in year 4 (the “step-out” year)
- 12 credits earned at the School of Medicine will count towards the MHA requirements
The MHA capstone project requires that students apply knowledge and skills to a specific public health problem or issue through a scholarly written paper. The final paper illustrates the student's understanding of health management and administration principles and processes as well as their ability to actively apply this knowledge and demonstrate acquisition of the MHA degree competencies. Successful completion of the capstone will satisfy the Scholarly Project requirement of the MD FRCT course.
