Guidelines for Elective Applications
Visiting Students from Foreign Medical Schools: It is the policy of the University of Maryland School of Medicine to accept only fourth-year students for clinical experiences who are enrolled in accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical schools that are approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
- Visiting students interested in pursuing electives at the University of Maryland School of Medicine must apply through VSLO. All students must be in good academic standing at an LCME accredited allopathic medical school and must be a fourth-year medical student before starting their electives.
- All students (including Canadian applicants) are required to pass USMLE Step 1.
- The OSA coordinator will ensure that applicants are in good academic standing, that they have both health and liability/malpractice insurance ($1,000,000/$3,000,000 minimum), have met immunization requirements, and have been trained in OSHA Universal Precautions. The coordinator will ensure each applicant has met all requirements prior to clearing their application for the department(s) coordinator to review and offer/deny each application.
- To participate in an elective, a visiting student may be required to submit one or more required supporting documents as shown below:
