Dr. George Fantry, assistant dean of OSA and OSR, will be leaving the University of Maryland School of Medicine and is taking the position of associate dean for student affairs and admissions at University of Arizona College of Medicine. Dr. Fantry was an integral part of both offices at the School of Medicine. We will miss him and we wish him the best with his career transition.

Graduation Volunteers
Would you like help out at graduation? You could come and see what you have to look forward to when you graduate! Graduation will take place on Thursday, May 19th at the Hippodrome Theatre at 12 N. Eutaw St. We need volunteers between 8:45 a.m. and noon! No need to stay the whole time. You will receive breakfast (and lunch, if you stay until noon). The first 30 volunteers will get a gift donated by the Office of Public Affairs. You will need to volunteer from 8:45 a.m. until at least noon to qualify for the t-shirt! It is a lot of fun! Email Dawn Roberts if you are interested.

Endowed Scholarships at the University of Maryland, Baltimore
If you are interested in applying for a scholarship, please visit: http://www.umaryland.edu/fin/awards/scholarships/. At this page, you will find eligibility information and financial details about the endowed scholarships UMB offers. If you choose to apply for a scholarship, you will have to respond to a series of questions to determine their eligibility and then submit their application materials. The required materials for all endowed scholarships are the same, so you will be able to apply for up to six awards at one time; the application form will retain their eligibility information for use in the review process. The application period for endowed scholarships will end on May 15, 2016. Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee, and winners will be identified by June 15, 2016.  

Financial Support for UMB-related International Studies
The Center for Global Education Initiatives is making financial support available to students who are participating in UMB-related studies overseas this summer 2016. The awards will range from $650-$1,000 and are intended to defray travel expenses for students.
Requirements of recipients receiving the Global Learning Opportunity (GLO) award include a reflective essay (1,000 words) or photo journal of their overseas experience, submitted photo(s) that can be shared on our website, and participation in a global forum group presentation during the fall with other students.

Any interested candidates must submit a letter of interest (preferably 1 page) by May 15, 2016 (11:59 pm) and include the following:

  • Project title
  • Project description & goals
  • Student’s role/responsibilities
  • UMB faculty mentor & role (indicate if faculty will be in country with student)
  • Project country
  • In-country organization
  • Estimated cost of trip
  • Other sources of funding that the student has received for their trip
  • Letter to be co-signed by faculty mentor OR submitted by the faculty mentor on the student’s behalf

The amount of each GLO award will be based on the number of applications received. Notification of award will be delivered by May 20, 2016. Submit the application via email to Heidi Fancher. Please feel free to contact Heidi Fancher if you have any questions.

Class of 2016

Graduation
Ceremony/Procession: The graduation ceremony will take place between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at the Hippodrome Baltimore located at 12 N. Eutaw St. Baltimore, MD 21201. Students should arrive to the M&T Pavilion (which is part of the Hippodrome) no later than 9:00 a.m. to line up with their class. Our procession will start promptly at 9:30 a.m., so it is important for you to be in line and in your appropriate order. There will be a light lunch following the ceremony.

Tickets: Graduation tickets are available for pick up in the Office of Students Affairs. The maximum is 8 total tickets. (Don’t forget that one of the tickets is for you.) Please leave the tickets you will not be using for your classmates. Waitlist tickets will be released as they become available. Please remember that you MUST have a ticket for yourself.  

Wheelchairs: Please let Dawn Roberts know if you will need wheelchair seating for your guests. Wheelchair seating is limited and must be reserved.

Campus-Wide Commencement: UMB will hold its University-wide commencement ceremony on Friday, May 20, at 2:00 p.m. in the Royal Farms Arena, 201 W. Baltimore St. Join Dr. Perman for a Party in the Park before the ceremony from 11:30 a.m. to around 1:00 p.m. The procession starts at 1:00 p.m. Look for the ‘MEDICINE’ banner. Please see the UMB Commencement website for more information.

Graduation Questionnaire: If your class has 80% completion of the graduation questionnaire, each of you will get a wonderful gift, which has been donated by the Medical Alumni Association. Look for the email message from GQ@aamc.org to get started or email GQ@aamc.org for the link!

Diploma: UMB diplomas will be presented to May graduates at the UMB-wide Commencement. Diplomas may be picked-up in the UMB Office of the Registrar located at 601 West Lombard Street (HS/HSL Second Floor) between May 23rd and May 27th . All remaining diplomas will be mailed in early June.

Other: If you will NOT be attending the University of Maryland School of Medicine graduation on Thursday, May 19, 2016, please let Dawn Roberts know.

Residency Applications
The Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) Tutorial will take place on May 6, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. in MSTF Auditorium. Please plan to attend to find out all about the residency application service and the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).

CV and Unique Characteristics
Please send your CV to the Office of Student Affairs in PDF format in a file named ‘LastName, FirstName’ by May 15, 2016. A sample CV can be found on this webpage. If you need help with your CV, feel free to schedule a meeting with Dawn Roberts. Please complete your unique characteristics bullet points by May 15, 2016. To access your unique characteristics, click on the ‘career’ tab on MedScope. A sample can be found there, as well as on the website at this link. We suggest that you create your bullet points in word and copy and paste into MedScope. Only ‘●’ or numbers can be used. No other special characters can be used.

To get your complimentary VSAS/ERAS photo taken, you should report to the Photo and Graphics Group.

Call the day you plan to have your shoot to confirm the photographers are available.
Remember to dress professionally. Wear what you would wear to a residency interview.
Your potential, future program directors will be viewing these photos. The background is usually white.
Guys: Please arrive at the photo shoot prepared. Wear your jacket and tie. Shave/get hair-cuts etc. before the photo shoot.
Ladies: Please dress appropriately for the photo shoot. Most students wear shirts (not low-cut) and jackets. The photographers can’t completely re-touch your hairstyle, so come with your hair looking very nice.
Everyone: Scrubs are not appropriate.
Also the photographers are very busy…No re-shoots!
Don’t wait until the last minute!

University of Utah Health Sciences (UUHS) Visiting Clerkship
The University of Utah Health Sciences (UUHS) is committed to inclusive excellence and to a physician workforce that can meet the needs of their increasingly diverse populations. They are pleased to announce the availability annual travel stipends for visiting clerkships for fourth-year medical students underrepresented in medicine.

If you are interested in learning more about residency programs at University of Utah Health Sciences, please schedule the rotation through the Visiting Student Coordinator (http://medicine.utah.edu/studentaffairs/visiting/). Also, please contact the Office of Health Equity and Inclusion (healthequity@hsc.utah.edu) for an application for the Visiting Clerkship Stipend ($2000). Funds are available for rotations from July to December and are to assist with travel and housing costs. Funding is limited and will be available on a first come, first served basis.

MUSC Underrepresented in Medicine Visiting Student Program
The MUSC Underrepresented in Medicine Visiting Student Program provides financial support to 4th-year students attending a U.S. medical school who are from backgrounds that are underrepresented in medicine including Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American/Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander. Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University Visiting Externship Program
This rotation provides an opportunity for underrepresented minority students to have a month-long clinical experience in the Department of Medicine at Jefferson where they can get to know the institution, department, and residency program. This rotation may be done in the months of June, July, or August. Accepted applicants will be provided with a stipend that they may use to cover housing and transportation expenses. Psychiatry Visiting Clerkship for Minority Medical Students
The University of Pennsylvania and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia are offering a visiting clerkship elective for 4th year students interested in pursuing a residency in Psychiatry. The program offers a $1,500 reimbursement for travel and living expenses. Students will be paired with a faculty member for mentorship and our residency program directors will meet with the students while they are on their visiting clerkship.
