Education and Employment
We provide training in clinical research for pre-and-post-doctoral fellows, orthopaedic residents, medical and undergraduate students, and staff.
Pre-Doctoral Orthopaedic Research Fellowship
The R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center (STC) Orthopaedic Traumatology Research Fellowship provides extraordinary US medical students and medical school applicants with a unique early-career opportunity. This 12-month funded program is designed for students looking to gain clinical experience, mentorship, and research exposure. For more information, visit our Orthopaedic Research Fellowship page.
Orthopaedic Trauma Medical Student Program
Our Summer Medical Student Program provides supervised full-time research experiences for first year University of Maryland medical students. During the 9-week summer research period with the department, students will participate in a full range of research training activities and develop their own hypothesis-driven project in basic, translational, and clinical research in orthopaedics. To apply, please email Earlene Thomas at ethomas@som.umaryland.edu.
High School Internship
We partner with local schools to provide internships for students to gain work readiness skills through occupational skills training and professional development and are exposed to a variety of healthcare careers. An internship with the Department of Orthopaedics provides the opportunity to have hands on experience with both clinical and research aspects of orthopaedic trauma.
