Clinical Exposure

In all of the training venues the fellow plays an active, direct role in the care of patients. The fellow spends the majority of their clinical time working within a Cornea attending clinic along side of residents. While not primarily a refractive surgery fellowship, there will be an opportunity to gain training and proficiency in refractive surgical procedures.

Locations

Through a variety of clinical locations, the fellow will gain an understanding of a spectrum of practice types. Fellows will rotate at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, the Baltimore VA, and Solomon Eye Associates (private practice in Bowie, MD).

Faculty

The fellow will interact with four Cornea faculty: Drs. Sarah Sunshine and Wuqaas Munir (Cornea Fellowship Director) at the University of Maryland and the Baltimore VA, and Dr. Jonathan Solomon at Solomon Eye Associates.

Didactic Program

The fellow participates in the Cornea lecture series, held in the mornings throughout the year. The fellow also participates in resident grand rounds, held Tuesday mornings on a weekly basis. The fellow is expected to present two case presentations over the course of the year. In addition, Cornea journal clubs are scheduled 4 times a year.

Opportunities for Research

The fellow is strongly encouraged to participate in research projects with both clinical and basic science faculty members. Please see the faculty links above for recent research topics. At least one scholarly project is required of the fellow.

Call

The Cornea fellow rotates general call with the faculty. Call is taken one week at a time, and approximately 4-5 times in the year.

When not on general call, the fellow is generally available for Cornea consultation during on and off hours. Cornea faculty are also always available for specific questions as well.
