Welcome to the University of Maryland School of Medicine family. If you are new to Baltimore, welcome to Charm City. We are excited and to have you join the University of Maryland School of Medicine family, comprised of over 1,500 faculty members working full or part-time as basic science, clinical and administrative faculty.
Our goal in the Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development (OFAPD) is to support you throughout your journey to achieving your career aspirations while fostering work-life balance in a diverse, inclusive and safe work environment.
An important first step in this journey is the New Faculty Orientation (NFO), which all new faculty are required to attend. Typically, New Faculty Orientation is held once a year in the fall. You will be introduced to key faculty leaders, hear essential advice and tips on professional development, as well as resources available to support teaching, research, and clinical growth.
The OFAPD is available to all UMSOM faculty for questions, suggestions, and concerns that arise. Please feel free to reach out to us at any time.
In terms of Professional Development, we offer various workshops and free CME courses throughout the year on preparing your CV, organizing clinical and teaching portfolios for promotion, among a host of other programs to help faculty develop a successful academic career. You will find these on the UMSOM Calendar.

New Faculty Orientation (NFO)
Typically, New Faculty Orientation is held once a year in the fall.
The 2023 New Faculty Orientation will be held at the Southern Management Center on October 12, 2023. Please save the Date - we look forward to meeting you!
Keeping Track for Promotion
While promotion may seem distant for new faculty, it is always a good idea to familiarize yourself early with the requirements for promotion, and to approach your work with an eye on promotion. The four areas valued for promotion at UMSOM are contributions to knowledge, clinical activity, teaching activity, and service to the institution and community.
Keeping and maintaining an accurate CV in UMSOM format, and updating teaching and clinical portfolios annually or more often, will help you keep track of relevant activities you will ultimately need to document for promotion.
