16th Annual Medical Student Auction Supports Fight Against Food Insecurity

January 27, 2022 | Lauren Robinson

Part of Proceeds from UMSOM Class of 2024 Student Auction to Benefit Bmore Community Food

In keeping with tradition since 2006, the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Class of 2024 Student Government has organized this year’s Annual Second-Year Medical Student Auction.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Bmore Community Food, an organization committed to serving the vulnerable and marginalized population in Baltimore City who are experiencing food insecurity. The remaining funds will support the Class of 2024 medical student activities.

This year’s auction will be fully virtual with online bidding opening on January 31st at 12:01am and running through February 3rd at 11:55pm. Parents, students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to participate.

Based on a class poll, Bmore Community Food was the charity of choice for this year’s auction. “A number of our classmates have volunteered with this organization before and speak very highly of their work in the community,” said Darby Moore, Class of 2024 President and MD candidate at UMSOM. “This organization has such a great pulse on the area’s most critical needs and knows exactly how to serve the community around it. We know it will make a definite difference in the lives of so many local residents.

Bmore Community Food is a local non-profit organization that was founded “to feed Baltimore’s most vulnerable residents during the Covid-19 pandemic.” As one of the city’s most successful food rescue organizations, dedicated volunteers pack boxes of fresh and non-perishable food items that are distributed weekly at curbside pick-up sites. The organization ended 2021 with a total of more than 1.7 million pounds of food distributed to local residents.

Darby Moore“Our goal is to raise between $3,000 and $4,000,” said Moore. “The majority of the funds will be given to the organization, and we are planning for the leftover funds to support a class event or activity.”

With the start of online bidding just days away, Moore and her fellow second-year medical students are encouraging family, friends, faculty, and local businesses to donate items or experiences that will be featured during the virtual auction. The Class of 2024 Student Government’s online silent auction bidding website currently includes a range of items and experiences that you can preview now before bidding begins, such as a weekend at a Shenandoah River home in Harpers Ferry and tickets to the University of Maryland Terrapins men’s and women’s basketball games.

“Over the past three months, we have gathered over 40 donated items and experiences totaling over $5,000,” said Moore. “It is amazing to know that even in such troubling times people are really going out of their way to donate to a great cause.”

Kerri Thom, MD, MSKerri Thom, MD, MS, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, and Professor of Epidemiology & Public Health, believes that the annual auction clearly supports the school’s overall commitment to community engagement. “The auction reflects our commitment to being engaged in the local community,” said Dr. Thom. “It is a fun opportunity for faculty, house staff, students, and their families to engage and unite in support of a noble cause.”

To make a donation to the Class of 2024 Annual Second-Year Medical Student Auction, please contact the Class of 2024 Student Government at umsom2024stugov@gmail.com. Auction item donations must be received by January 28, 2022. Monetary donations can also be made online at http://www.medschool.umaryland.edu/StudentAuction.
