UM SOM Emergency Medicine Physician Dr. Joseph Martinez Appointed Assistant Dean for Clinical Medical Education and Residency Programs Liaison

Appointment Strengthens School’s Commitment to Excellent Medical Education

University of Maryland School of Medicine (UM SOM) Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs James B. Kaper, PhD, along with Dean E. Albert Reece, MD, PhD, MBA, announced today that Joseph P. Martinez, MD, Associate Professor in the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine, has been appointed Assistant Dean for Clinical Medical Education, and Residency Programs Liaison. In this new capacity, Dr. Martinez will continue with his prior duties, and will also maintain his current title, of Assistant Dean of Student Affairs.

Dr. Martinez received an MD degree from UM SOM, and then completed his combined residency in emergency medicine and internal medicine at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). He joined the UM SOM faculty after that, in 2003.

“Over his years at Maryland, Dr. Martinez has focused enormous energy and effort on improving the learning environment for our medical students,” said Dean Reece, who is also the vice president for Medical Affairs, University of Maryland, and the John Z. and Akiko K. Bowers Distinguished Professor. “His dedicated work in this area has led to important advancements in how we educate students. I know that in his new expanded role, he will continue to provide innovative leadership that will move our pedagogy forward in exciting ways.”

While Dr. Martinez’s responsibilities as an emergency medicine physician will continue, in his new position, he will be fully engaged in all aspects of the Office of Medical Education, including the Liaison Committee on Medical Education accreditation process. He is also charged with optimizing medical students’ learning environment in all clinical areas. To accomplish this, he will:

• Work with the UMMC chief medical officer to participate on hospital committees where undergraduate medical education interfaces with broader hospital processes and policies;
• Help to enhance the quality of the learning environment—including attention to campus safety, access to clinical areas, and shared workspace—for all students who rotate at UMMC;
• Collaborate with the Designated Institutional Officer and Residency Program Directors to optimize medical students’ learning experiences during clinical rotations; develop innovative approaches to teaching by faculty, fellows, and residents in each department; create or refine an explicit evaluation and feedback tool to evaluate teaching by faculty, fellows, and residents; and develop tools to enhance the students’ future roles as teachers of their patients, families, and peers.

Dr. Martinez has helped develop and edit several books related to teaching in the clinical arena. His clinical research interests include mesenteric ischemia. He has contributed to many peer-reviewed journals including Medical Teacher, Journal of Emergency Medicine, Emergency Medicine Clinics of North America and Medical Clinics of North America.
