Students in classroomFirst and Second Years

The department of neurology faculty teach in the first-year Brain and Behavior course. This 10-week course covers material that ranges from basic neurosciences and neuroanatomy to clinical correlates of neural dysfunction, neurological disease states, psychopathology, drugs of addiction, psychiatric disease states and management of psychological disorders. The format of the course consists of lectures, small group discussions, clinical correlations, team-based learning sessions, and lab demonstrations. Selected faculty members also teach in other areas such as the Cell and Molecular Biology block in the first year and in blocks where epidemiology and immunology are taught, based upon their research interests and expertise.

 

Third Year

NEUR 530: Neurology Clerkship

All members of the third-year/fourth-year class have a four-week clerkship on the neurology-neurology service at the University Hospital, the adjacent Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center, or the University of Maryland Midtown Campus. A didactic series of clinically oriented lecture-demonstrations are given by the neurology staff. In addition, students participate in clinical rounds and may assist in the performance of some procedures. Under house staff and attending staff supervision, students are responsible for the care of patients with neurological disorders in both critical care unit and ward settings as well as in out-patient clinics.

 

Electives

NEUR 541: Advanced Clinical Neurology

After completion of the third year, students are offered a variety of clinical experiences on the neurological services at the University Hospital, Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and the University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute. The neurologic examination of the patient is emphasized, as well as the study and application of a wide variety of specialized neurologic diagnostic techniques. Students will become proficient in taking a neurologic history, performing a neurologic exam, and formulating a reasonable diagnostic impression or differential diagnosis, a plan of investigation and management for common neurologic problems.

NEUR 542: Neurology Subspecialty ClinicsDoctor listening to patient

This rotation will introduce students to several neurology subspecialties in outpatient neurology including neuromuscular, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, and stroke.

NEUR 545: NERVE - Neurology Elective ReVitalizing Education

Senior medical students interested in academic neurology and teaching can gain exposure to leadership, administrative and pedagogy skills integral to clinician-educators.

NEUR 548: Sub-Internship in Neurocritical Care

Students are an integral part of the Neurocritical Care team and gain first-hand knowledge of neurologic emergencies.

NEUR 589: Neurological Research Electives 

In all four undergraduate years, a limited number of students will have the opportunity to work with individual members of the department in the following areas:

  1. cerebrovascular physiology
  2. neuromuscular research
  3. neurophysiology
  4. neurochemistry
  5. neurovirology and immunology
  6. computers and neurology
  7. epilepsy
  8. degenerative disorders 
  9. molecular-biology and the nervous system
