Rehabilitation Medicine

At the University of Maryland, Rehabilitation Medicine is a Division of the Department of Neurology. Our division includes physicians with training in neurology with subsequent fellowship training in rehabilitation and individuals who have completed physical medicine and rehabilitation residency training. We offer a full complement of rehabilitation services in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Inpatient rehabilitation services are provided at the University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute (UM Rehab). Departmental faculty provide medical care to individuals in the stroke, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injury/multi-trauma units at the Institute.  Rehabilitation care is also provided to individuals with other neurologic diagnoses, such as Guillain-Barre syndrome, Myasthenia gravis, anoxic encephalopathy, and cancer-related neurologic disease.  We also take care of patients with orthopedic trauma and amputation.  The University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopedic Institute is the largest rehabilitation hospital in Maryland and serves a very wide geographic area.

Outpatient rehabilitation physician care is available both at UM Rehab and at the University Maryland Department of Neurology outpatient practice in the Frenkil building. We provide specialty services in spasticity management which includes the use of intrathecal baclofen pump therapy as well as botulinum toxin type injection. Our physicians also provide focused specialty care for people with long-standing neurologic impairments such as spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury.  At UM Rehab, we also provide interdisciplinary amputee clinic services and electromyography services.
