Kidney Transplant Fellowship Program

Transplant Fellowship Program is certified by the American Society of Transplantation and is accredited for training in kidney and pancreas transplantation. The duration of the fellowship is 12 months. During this period the trainee will be exposed to all aspects of transplantation medicine and become a UNOS-certified transplant physician who could take the role of medical director in any kidney and pancreas transplant program.

The fellowship program includes 6 months of inpatient transplant rotations. During this period the trainees will function in a multidisciplinary team, working closely with transplant surgery, transplant pharmacy, and transplant Infectious disease teams and dedicated nursing and support staff. The transplant fellow functions under direct supervision of one our transplant nephrology faculty, and is involved with all aspects of medical care and immunosuppressive therapy of the patients. The large number of patients transplanted and followed by our center provides a very rich experience for the trainees to be exposed to and learn about all aspects of transplantation and the different forms of post-transplant complications and medical care.

Fellowship Structure

The trainees have rotations in the Immunogenetics and Pathology laboratories to learn about the tissue typing and antibody-detection techniques and the interpretation of the results, and renal and pancreas allograft pathology. In addition, the fellows have a weekly post-transplant clinic to learn about the outpatient care of transplant recipients throughout the year, and weekly recipient and donor evaluation clinics for six months. Clinical or basic science research is mandatory and the fellows can choose to work with one of the clinical researches in the division or one of the transplant immunologists in the medical center to work on and complete a research project.

For an interested trainee who would like to have an additional year of research training we will assist in obtaining additional appropriate funding for a second-year research fellowship. Participation in the weekly recipient evaluation, donor evaluation, Transplant pathology, and Mortality and Morbidity meetings, and opportunity to perform numerous allograft biopsies and learn transplant imaging hands-on, provides the fellows with skills to become independent medical directors in any transplant program. The transplant nephrology fellow is expected to assist in supervising and teaching the general nephrology fellows, internal medicine residents and medical students on the transplant service. Didactic components of the program include a weekly transplant seminar on transplant medicine or immunology, face to face discussion of AST curricular topics with transplant nephrology faculty and bimonthly journal clubs.

Attendance in the yearly AST Fellows Symposium and the American Transplant Congress is required, and the fellows are expected to present their research in this meeting and complete a manuscript for publication.
