The Warren Alpert Summer Scholars Genetic Counseling Program at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is designed for undergraduate students interested in careers in genetic counseling. The internship is part of a multifaceted collaboration among five institutions: the University of Maryland School of Medicine, the University of Pennsylvania, Sarah Lawrence College, Rutgers University, and Boston University.

About the Internship

  • Full-time, paid summer internships (40 hours per week for six weeks @ $17/hour = $4,080, pretax)
  • Internships run Monday, June 16, through Friday, July 25, 2025
  • Shadowing with genetic counselors in the Baltimore area
  • Exposure to a broad range of clinical genetics specialties
  • Participation in seminars, conferences, and case conferences
  • Exposure to and participation in research and laboratory work
  • One-on-one interactions with genetic counselors and current students
  • Networking opportunities with other genetic counseling interns

Applicant Qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Be undergraduate students (rising juniors or seniors).
  • Have a keen interest in health professions and genetics.
  • Have a GPA of at least 3.0 and have completed some college-level coursework in biology, chemistry and/or genetics.
  • Submit clearance paperwork, which includes criminal background checks, and provide the immunization records (including for COVID-19) that will be required for clearance by the clinical sites.
  • Have access to housing in Baltimore for the in-person components of the internship.
