Research Opportunities
Our current active research funding exceeds $115M, over half of which comes from NIH and other federal agencies. With nearly 100 funded investigators, the department has an extensive research base in both the basic and clinical sciences. Our research training programs are extensive and include basic, clinical and translational research training awards.

The UMSOM Department of Medicine also supports and conducts research internationally, with considerable infrastructure in such geographically diverse areas as South America and Africa.
UMSOM ranked third in the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) latest list of Research Expenditures per Faculty. The average expenditure among the 126 medical schools in the nation was $80,261, but our department's faculty had $275,677 in spending.
In the AAMC list of general Research Expenditures, the UMSOM Department of Medicine ranked 14th, with 51.9 million, compared to the average of 21.9 million.
