Physician Leader-Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine (3-309-1269)
The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the University of Maryland Institute of Health Computing are seeking a highly qualified individual to join our team in a major leadership role. This transformational position is designed to drive innovation and excellence within the Division and School.
Role with Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine
- Serve as Vice Chair for Education, playing key roles within fellowship programs, particularly towards physician-scientist development. This includes a formal position within Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Leadership.
- Provide leadership and strategy in external communications and branding, given the critical and successful role as ATS Scholar journal editor.
- Play a significant role with efforts at the VA Medical Center, including inpatient rounds and clinic responsibilities.
- Continue and build research and development programs into AI algorithms and technologies in mechanical ventilation (both own programs and participating in ongoing programs in the Division).
- Develop and implement strategic initiatives to advance the department's mission and goals.
- Foster a collaborative and inclusive environment that promotes research, education, and clinical excellence.
- Represent the department within the University and to external stakeholders.
- Mentor and support faculty, staff, and trainees in their professional development.
Role with the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing (UM-IHC)
- Serve as Director of Educational Initiatives (specific title flexible), acting as a liaison between UMSOM Medical Education and IHC.
- Lead educational mission programs for the IHC, including course development for programs for graduate students and PhD, early career faculty, post docs, community engagement programs, and entrepreneurial training programs.
- Leverage own and current Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine research into AI in critical care, and advanced data analytics in clinical investigations.
Expected faculty rank for this position is Professor, however, final rank, tenure status and salary will be dependent upon selected candidate’s qualifications and experience. We offer competitive salary and benefits.
Expected salary range for Professor is $266,007 (min) and $409,820 (max). The referenced salary range reflects base pay, which is based on faculty rank and years in rank. This salary range does not include all components of the departmental faculty compensation program or pay from participation in departmental variable compensation programs. The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Lung Transplant/Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine (3-309-1226)
The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, & Sleep Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is seeking a full-time pulmonologist and critical care physician to join our expanding team. This hybrid position will cover our MICUs at the University of Maryland Medical Center Downtown and Midtown Campus locations, as well as participate in our inpatient and ambulatory pulmonary practices and may include our advanced lung disease service which cares for pre- and post-lung transplant patients. The lung transplant program is centered at the University of Maryland Medical Center and is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of professionals focused on providing exceptional care to patients with critical lung illnesses and developing cutting-edge treatment.
Qualifications:
- MD/DO degree from a recognized accredited university (or foreign equivalent).
- BE/BC in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
- Experience in transplant pulmonology is encouraged.
- Strong clinical and teaching skills.
- Eligible to obtain an independent license to practice medicine in the State of Maryland.
- Interest in pre- and post-transplant-related clinical and/or translational research is encouraged.
Responsibilities:

Medical Director of Lung Transplant (3-309-1232)
The Division of Pulmonary, Sleep and Critical Care Medicine is recruiting for an experienced physician leader to serve as Medical Director of Lung Transplant for the University of Maryland School of Maryland. The lung transplant program is centered at the University of Maryland Medical Center and is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of professionals. Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee and direct all clinical, operational, and academic activities related to lung transplantation.
- Develop and implement strategies for growing the lung transplant program and improving outcomes.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory bodies including UNOS, CMS, and Joint Commission.
- Collaborate with hospital leadership to set program goals, secure necessary resources, and ensure financial sustainability.
- Ensure integration of the lung transplant program with other departments (e.g., cardiology, critical care, surgery).
- Develop partnerships with referring physicians and other medical institutions to enhance the lung transplant referral network.
- Work closely with the hospital’s marketing and outreach teams to promote the lung transplant program regionally and nationally.
- Participate in community outreach and education regarding organ donation and transplant opportunities.

This position requires an MD/DO degree from a recognized accredited university (or foreign equivalent). The Medical Director of Lung Transplant will lead and oversee all aspects of the lung transplant program, including patient care, research initiatives, and program development. This leadership role requires a physician who is board-certified in pulmonary diseases, has completed a transplant fellowship or equivalent, and has extensive experience in lung transplantation. The director will work closely with multidisciplinary teams including surgeons, intensivists, pulmonologists, pharmacists, transplant coordinators, and researchers to ensure the highest standards of patient care, medical education, and clinical research. Eligibility to obtain an independent license to practice medicine in the State of Maryland is required. Experience in transplant-related clinical and/or translational research is strongly encouraged.
