Division of Infectious Diseases
The Division of Infectious Diseases has a long and proud history at the University of Maryland School of Medicine of making great strides in discovering ways to prevent and combat infectious diseases.
The ID Division is particularly strong when it comes to the care of patients with HIV infection and in treating infections in patients with cancer, and patients who have had surgery and transplants. The Division also hosts a strong antimicrobial management program. The Division is responsible for the in-patient HIV medical ward, as well as consultation services at the University of Maryland Medical Center, the Baltimore VA Medical Center, the Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center, the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, Institute of Human Virology, the surgical service, the ICU service, and the virology consult service.
The Division also plays a major role in educating medical students during the second year course in Host Defenses and Infectious Diseases, during the third year clinical clerkship in medicine on the inpatient HIV ward, and during the fourth year on the infectious diseases elective.
The ID Division supports two fellowship programs leading to board-eligibility in infectious diseases, a general program and a program concentrating in HIV infection.
Many of our Infectious Disease faculty work in the Institute of Human Virology (IHV), a world-class center of excellence focusing on chronic viral diseases and virally linked cancers. It was formed in 1996 as a partnership between the State of Maryland, the City of Baltimore, the University System of Maryland and the University of Maryland Medical System. The IHV is a center of the University of Maryland School of Medicineand is home to some of the most world-renowned experts in all of virology.
