Division of Rheumatology, Allergy & Clinical Immunology

The Division of Rheumatology, Allergy & Clinical Immunology in the Department of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is working diligently to make life a little less painful for patients with arthritis and other rheumatic diseases, such as lupus.

Our researchers and physicians continue to be dedicated to finding and testing new drug therapies for the management of arthritis.  Our team is focused on investigating contributing factors to many rheumatic diseases, such as immune-system abnormalities and T-cell deficiencies, and studying ways to prevent bone loss in older men and women.

Research

As the U.S. population continues to age, the prevalence of rheumatological disorder diagnoses continues to increase, creating an increased burden on the practice of rheumatology. This demand and need is why our researchers and faculty are dedicated to finding new and effective treatment options. Our focus and goal are to create greater patient awareness and identify opportunities that address the challenges faced by patients suffering from rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases.

Education & Training

The Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Clinical Immunology offers a two-year, ACGME-accredited fellowship for physicians who are board-eligible or board-certified in Internal Medicine.

Patient Care

Our rheumatologists' ambulatory clinical practices are held at one or more of the University of Maryland Medical Center’s Outpatient clinical facilities.  Our faculty can manage and treat all rheumatic diseases, including arthrocentesis, joint and soft tissue injections, synovial fluid analysis, musculoskeletal imaging (bone and joint radiographs), bone densitometry, electromyography and nerve conduction tests, and serologic testing. Several of our faculty have special interests in treating systemic lupus erythematosus, a chronic (long-lasting) autoimmune disease that can affect many parts of the body.
