The Division of Hospitalist & General Internal Medicine was founded on the principles of delivering excellent care and educating internists who have practiced across the state and region for almost 40 years. As the division has grown, it has also become active in innovative clinical, educational, and research programs, both here on campus and through our affiliated partners.

Our clinical programs offer the opportunity to learn how to provide quality medical care in both outpatient and inpatient settings. Our outpatient practices offer preventative health services as well as management of acute and chronic medical problems across three locations. The Faculty Practice Office serves as a private practice for the campus, Baltimore City residents, and surrounding counties. Our Owings Mills practice serves Owings Mills residents and surrounding communities in Baltimore County. University Health Center, also located on this campus, serves as an additional training site, offering preventative, acute, and chronic care management to patients in the surrounding community.

In the domain of hospital-based care, our division has been a leader in cost-effective care through the creation of several innovative services for the University of Maryland Medical Center. These services have been critical in addressing patient length-of-stay and charge-per-case for the hospital. In addition, our faculty attend on the inpatient service at the VA Medical Center and on the University Midtown Campus. The Division’s palliative care section is dedicated to offering symptom relief and patient-centered comfort care for advanced stage diseases in an effort to reduce or prevent hospitalizations.

Clinical research activities in General Internal Medicine include federally and internally funded projects and pilot initiatives. Federally funded projects focus on genomic screening impacting risk management and or differential diagnosis of common conditions in the primary care.  An additional project focuses controlling coronary disease by assessing the preventive effectiveness of strategies designed to mitigate atherosclerosis burden in young adults.  Pilot initiatives include assessing the impact of Community Health Workers in closing Care Gaps and decreasing emergency department utilization.  Additional projects focus on rapid response team effectiveness and medical education.  The Division also offers a health screening and medical monitoring service for non-clinician researchers with clinical protocols. The Division’s research staff includes a nurse coordinator, statistical support, and other research specialists. The research environment is fertile with research career development opportunities.

Our division has a strong commitment to the education of medical students and house staff here on campus and at our affiliated institutions. Division members serve in several key campus leadership positions, participate in numerous committees for the school, the hospital, and the practice plans, and oversee, and direct many of the training and educational programs of the Department and School.
