A graduate of Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, MD with a major in business and finance, and a minor in economics, Carrie began her career at the University of Maryland in 1996 in Provider Relations for the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). In her 10-year career at UMMC, Carrie served as the Practice Manager of the Evelyn Jordan Center and Program Manager of the AIDS Education and Training Center.

In 2007, she joined the Department of Medicine as Clinical Manager and then Program Administrator in the Division of Infectious Diseases. Carrie later added Administrator for Clinical Services in the Department of Medicine to her responsibilities -- playing an integral role in the transition of our key clinical programs to University of Maryland Medical Center - Midtown Campus (UMMC-Midtown).

She has provided significant financial and clinical expansion contributions within our Infectious Diseases Division and in the Institute of Human Virology (IHV). Carrie has excelled over the years and has been recognized by the Department of Medicine and other institutions for her outstanding service and leadership.

Mr. Seifert joined the University of Maryland in May 2006.  In his tenure he has served as the Division Administrator of the Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine division; the Director of Clinical Business Operations for the Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine and Gerontology divisions; and the Chief Business Officer of the Center for Vaccine Development & Global Health.  He earned his MBA from Loyola University Maryland.

Tara earned a BS degree in Business Management and Human Resource Management in 2005 from what was then called the College of Notre Dame of Maryland. She started her employment with UMMC in August 2019 as the Business Manager for the Department of Psychiatry.  In January 2020, Tara was promoted to Clinical Operations Business Manager for the Division of Palliative Medicine. She has over 20 years of healthcare management experience in managed care operations, provider service, and accounts receivable. As Operations Manager, Tara provides oversight, support and leadership to achieve the goals of the division.

Kate Autry has been with the University of Maryland School of Medicine since November 2011. As Director, Kate provides oversight, support, and leadership to achieve the goals of Endocrinology and PPGM as well as the day-to-day operations. She has eight years of experience in research administration with international and domestic research and holds a Master of Science in Negotiations and Conflict Management from the University of Baltimore.

I began my role at UMB in April 2022.  I am excited to have the opportunity to be part of the SOM Administrative team and the opportunity to work with the Faculty and Staff of the Gastroenterology & Hepatology, as well as the Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology Divisions.

Prior to joining the UMB team, I served as the Sr. Director of Operations at a local community-based hospital.  In that role, I was able to grow and foster my professional career within the healthcare system and feel that I was able to contribute to building a strong team and implementing workflows that better served our patients.

Shelly Byrd started as the Accounting Director with the Office of Finance in the Department of Medicine in 2022. She was previously the Accounting Manager at the University of Maryland Global Campus. Shelly and her staff handle the accounting functions for the department.

Kim has been employed at the University since 1987, working for Surgery and Radiation Oncology before moving to the Department of Medicine in 1993. She was employed in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine in 1993. In 1994 she was recruited to Project Assistant for Operations and was promoted to Operations Manager in 1996 and held the position of Director of Operations/Facility Project Specialist until 2019.  Her current title is Director of Operations /Project Manager which she was promoted to in 2019.  Some of her main responsibilities are working with campus wide entities on managing department space, relocations, construction projects and engaging with facilities for the Department of Medicine.

Ms. Chiapparelli joined the Department of Medicine, Primary Care Programs in 1980. In 1983 Primary Care Programs became the Division of General Internal Medicine. In 1987 Ms Chiapparelli transferred to the Division of Nephrology. Since 1994, she has been responsible for assisting leadership in achieving organizational objectives, setting long-term and short-term goals and the administration of day-to-day operations including the clinical and basic science research activities of the Division of Nephrology.

Rachel Coates-Knowles started at UMB School of Medicine in January 2017. She has over 15 years of experience in pre- and post-award grants management and is currently serving as Research Administrator for the Department of Medicine and Occupational Medicine as well as providing interim assistance to other School of Medicine Divisions. Ms. Coates-Knowles is a graduate of Rosemont College where she earned a M.S. degree in Management.

Robyn originally started with the Department of Medicine in 1989 as an administrative assistant for the Operations Division and transferred to the Academic Programs office in 1990. In 2013 she was promoted to Director of Academic Programs. The Academic Programs office is responsible for the recruitment, academic appointment, medical staff credentialing and promotions of all faculty in the Department of Medicine and also maintains the department's malpractice inventory. This office also handles the postdoctoral fellow process through the School of Medicine and serves as a liaison between the University of Maryland Medical Center and the clinical fellowship programs within Medicine.

A graduate of Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with a BS in Health Information Management, and an MBA/MS in Healthcare Management/Financial Management.  In 2021, Amala joined the University of Maryland School of Medicine as the Director of Clinical Business Operations in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Hospitalist Services.  In this role, Amala is responsible for overseeing the financial and administrative operations for the division.  Amala is an experienced, goal driven, compassionate, healthcare leader with over 16 years of experience in academic practice management and hospital financial management.  Prior to joining the University of Maryland, Amala served as Department Administrator for Radiology and Sr Administrator for Family Medicine and Dermatology at Temple University.  Amala is also a Co-Investigator on the Partnering to Achieve School Success (PASS) study with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).

At UMB/DOM/CVM, Chris is responsible for assisting the Division leadership in achieving organizational objectives, setting long-term and short-term goals and the administration of day-to-day operations of the Division.

Mr. Heiger came to the Department of Medicine as a Network Technician in 1992 to facilitate Medicine’s transition toward a centralized Local Area Network (LAN) and provide computer support to faculty and staff. Mr. Heiger was promoted to Manager of Information Systems in 1994 and then to Director in 2001 and continues in that position today.  His staff consists of 5 employees who provide IT support and services to 1400 faculty and staff in the Department of Medicine and the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health.

I proudly joined UMB in July of 2020 as Clinical Business Operations Director for multiple Divisions where I’ve had the privilege to work with a phenomenal team of leaders, physicians, and clinical staff partners. My responsibilities include assisting the Division leadership in achieving organizational objectives, setting long-term and short-term goals and the administration of day-to-day operations of multiple Divisions.

Prior to moving to Maryland and joining the University, I was President of a large home health and hospice agency providing healthcare services in the state of Texas with a team of over 400 employees. I’ve been fortunate in my professional career allowing me to experience life throughout the US including the Midwest and Texas where I had the privilege to make a positive difference in many patient’s lives. Despite a fulfilling and rewarding career, my greatest joy and accomplishment in life are my 2 incredible sons who fill me with pride and appreciation.

Ms. Williams is the executive administrative assistant and focal point of the Division of Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health. Before joining the program in 2000, she worked in health care for 10 years. Her wide variety of skills comes from working in such environments as mental health, family preservation, and shelters for women, and administration. She provides executive assistance to the division faculty and staff while also serving the programs' patients, clients and students. Ms. Williams received her A.A. Degree from Baltimore City Community College and is currently pursuing her Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources Management from the University of Maryland University College.
