Outside photo of Davidge HallThe Department of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine provides state-of-the-art patient care and improving treatment through clinical research and education. Department of Medicine physicians provide care to thousands of patients annually at the University of Maryland Medical Center, the University of Maryland Midtown Campus, the Baltimore VA Medical Center, the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, and seven other University of Maryland System hospitals.

Since 1807, the Department of Medicine has trained physicians of the highest caliber, including more than half of the physicians currently practicing medicine in Maryland. With 351 full-time faculty members, the Department of Medicine is the largest department in the School of Medicine and is responsible for the training of 176 residents and 126 fellows.

The Department of Medicine consists of twelve divisions:  Cardiovascular Medicine, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Hospitalist and General Internal Medicine, Geographic Medicine, Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, Hematology and Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, and Rheumatology, Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
