Summary of the Research Project:
For project we will be evaluating the Circumsporozoite Protein (CSP) in a PfSPZ Vaccine trial. PfSPZ is a metabolically active, non-replicating sporozoite vaccine. Using MinION, we will be comparing CSP sequences of P. falciparum infections in vaccinated persons to infections in unvaccinated infected persons to examine if the sequences could represent 'vaccine evasion’. Depiction of the variation of CSP sequences will provide knowledge and understanding of the strain-specific efficacy of PfSPZ vaccine efficacy. We expect that an analysis of our sequence data will lead to the identification of major CSP variants in our vaccine trial sites and the detection of amino acids that are the target of vaccine escape.
