Established October 6, 2000, with a generous bequest by Frederick W. Plugge, IV, MD '57 in gratitude for the medical training he received to honor Robert W. Buxton, MD, who was the ninth professor and chair of the Department of Surgery. Income from the endowment may be used to support the salary, fringe benefits, and research, educational and administrative expenses of the named chair.

Christine L. Lau, MD, MBA
Dr. Christine L. Lau is the Dr. Robert W. Buxton Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the Chief of Surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center.
She specializes in all aspects of general thoracic surgery including lung cancer, mediastinal diseases, benign lung and esophageal disease, esophageal cancer and lung transplantation.
