Diabetes is an epidemic in the state of Maryland with approximately 537,000 adults in Maryland, or 1/11 of the adult population diagnosed with diabetes. Every year an estimated 28,500 adults in Maryland are diagnosed with diabetes. Approximately 1,604,500 adults in Maryland or 33.2% of the adult population have obesity.  The Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition has established a Center of Excellence to address the demand for clinical services for the West Baltimore community and throughout the State of Maryland.

Clinical Programs

UM Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology (UMCDE)

The Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition provides comprehensive multidisciplinary care for patients with diabetes and other endocrine disorders including thyroid, bone, calcium, pituitary, adrenal, and reproductive disorders. Care is provided by the center’s adult and pediatric endocrinologists along with podiatrist, psychiatrist and other health professionals including nurse practitioners, diabetes educators, nutritionists, social workers, nurses, and medical assistants. The Center is located at the UMMC Midtown campus in 19,000 sq ft of in newly renovated, state-of-the art clinical space, and providers perform approximately 30,000 patient visits yearly. 

Glucose Management Team (GMT)

GMT provides comprehensive services to improve the self-management of diabetes for individuals, utilizing an interprofessional team and shared decision-making.  The GMT service begins as an inpatient service and follows the individual through transitions of care in the ambulatory setting.

Thyroid Program at UMCDE

The Thyroid Program at UMCDE offers state of the art care for patients with thyroid dysfunction, thyroid nodules, and thyroid cancer. Specialists at the Center perform thyroid biopsies with advanced diagnostics to determine whether patients may need surgery. Multidisciplinary care of patients with thyroid cancer with colleagues in surgery, radiology, nuclear medicine, and oncology provide state of the art care for patients with advanced thyroid malignancies.

Weight Management Program at UMCDE

The Center has multiple obesity board certified providers to assist patients in healthy weight loss. Educators help work with patients on diet and lifestyle changes. Medical therapies aid in weight loss and prevention of chronic medical conditions such as diabetes. A body composition analyzer helps determine changes in fat and lean body mass. Our team also works closely with the bariatric surgery program for those patients interested in surgical management of overweight/obesity.

Pituitary Program at UMCDE

Specialists diagnose and evaluate patients with pituitary tumors and other disorders of the hypothalamus and pituitary. Patients are evaluated in a multi-disciplinary approach with colleagues from neurosurgery, neurology, radiology, and radiation oncology to provide timely diagnosis and treatment.  

Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Disease Clinics/Transplant Endocrinology Program at UMCDE

Adult patients seen in the metabolic bone clinics include those with osteoporosis, Paget disease of bone, renal osteodystrophy, parathyroid disorders, non-PTH mediated hypercalcemia, kidney stones, vitamin D disorders, osteogenesis imperfecta, hypophosphatemic rickets and oncogenic osteomalacia. Post-transplant patients with diabetes and metabolic bone disease are also cared for at UMCDE.

Women’s Health Program at UMCDE

Specialized care in diagnosing and managing women’s health issues such as PCOS, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, premature ovarian insufficiency, and diabetes or thyroid disorders during pregnancy.

Metabolic Liver Disease Program at UMCDE

Expert care in the management of metabolic liver disease, often associated with diabetes, pre-diabetes or obesity. Close collaboration with Hepatology and nutrition educators to provide multidisciplinary care, lifestyle management, and medical treatments for fatty liver disease. Onsite non-invasive testing for  fatty liver and liver fibrosis (via Fibroscan).

Endocrine Diagnostic Testing Unit at UMCDE

Provocative hormone testing (stimulation/suppression tests) is done onsite to help diagnose and manage disorders of hormonal excess or deficiency. 

Endocrinology & Diabetes Consult Service

Our faculty, physician assistants, diabetes nurse educator, pharmacist, social worker, and patient navigator staff an active 24 x 7 inpatient diabetes and endocrine consult service at University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore Veteran's Affairs Medical Center and UMMC Midtown.
